DESCRIPTION:When Does Protest Make a Difference?\nThursday\, August 22\, 20
 24\, 7 PM PDT\nASU California Center Broadway in Los Angeles\, CA\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmerican history credits protest with ending s
egregation and the Vietnam War\, securing women the right to vote and the
LGBTQ+ community a path to equality\, and building one nation out of 13 co
lonies. It’s a national tradition enshrined in the Constitution and fierce
ly protected by the legal system. But protest can also be violent\, messy\
, and contested\, and frequently ends with the status quo remaining in pla
ce. How—and perhaps when—can you know if a protest is working\, or has wor
ked? What makes some protests more effective than others\, and how do prot
estors balance the desire for peace and the attention force receives?\nLas
t spring\, protests led to a number of outcomes on college campuses\, from
clashes with administrations\, police\, and counter-protestors to divestm
ent agreements. With students and faculty returning to campuses across the
nation\, Zócalo will convene two back-to-back panels moderated by KQED co
rrespondent and co-host of “The California Report” Saul Gonzalez to discus
s when and how protest makes a difference.\nThe first panel will start at
7 p.m. PDT and feature scholars and thinkers who can offer larger context
for the current moment: urban journalism professor Danielle K. Brown\, con
stitutional law professor and former director of the ACLU LGBT Project Mat
t Coles\, and First Amendment scholar Eugene Volokh.\n\nThe second panel w
ill start at 8 p.m. PDT and feature practitioners who have engaged in hist
oric protests in Los Angeles and beyond: co-founder of the day laborer ban
d Los Jornaleros del Norte Pablo Alvarado\, Los Angeles Police Department
former assistant chief Sandy Jo MacArthur\, and immigrant rights and labor
  justice activist Victor Narro.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER
