Saturday, May 4

13. Saturday, 1:00pm – 2:00pm, STOP Starcity

Roxie Theater (outside)

3117 16th St.

SF

+++This action is NOT against the Roxie, who stands with the people and not Starcity+++

Starcity is a startup that “disrupts” housing by emptying out low-income SRO hotels and then flipps them into tech dorms for the ruling class.

They recently did this at 2072 Mission St, where rooms that were $400 a month were repainted and now go for $2000 each.

Because Starcity is so gross, they are hosting a number of artwashing events to rebrand their horrid company. Among these is the fake film fest they are holding at the Roxie.

We demand they turn all their property back to low income renters and close their wack business.

Join us outside the Roxie to STOP STARCITY

14. Saturday, 1:00pm – 2:00pm, In the Land of My Ancestors Film and Discussion

Lakeview Branch Library

550 El Embarcadero

Oakland

In the Land of My Ancestors celebrates the resiliency and touching generosity of beloved Ohlone elder, Ann Marie Sayers. This documentary short is produced by South Asian photojournalist, Rucha Chitnis. The film shines light on the perilous impact of colonization and settler colonialism on Ohlone people in the San Francisco Bay Area and how Sayers created a refuge for many indigenous peoples in her ancestral land called the Indian Canyon to reclaim their culture, spirituality and roots.

The documentary short reveals the profound suffering of the Ohlone people during the California missions and later as the Gold Rush followed, when there were bounties on the heads of California Natives. Indian Canyon served as a refuge for Ohlone people, who wanted to escape the harsh restrictions of the Missions and were able to find the canyon after navigating through a swamp. And today, it continues to serve as a sanctuary for many Native people who are reclaiming their indigeneity.

16. Sunday, 2:30p – 4:00pm, Stories of Resistance: Root Causes of Migration in Honduras

Buena Vista United Methodist Church

2311 Buena Vista Ave.

Alameda

On March 18-25, a delegation of nearly 75 faith leaders and immigrant justice advocates, mostly from the United States, and several joining from South America, traveled to Honduras to meet with grassroots and religious partners in order to more deeply understand the root causes of migration that have spurred thousands to flee Honduras.

The international, interfaith delegation met with organizations working and advocating for the rights of migrants and explore factors that are forcing migrants to flee, including: violence, environmental degradation, drug cartels, organized crime, corrupt security forces, and impunity for ongoing human rights violations.

Reverend Deborah Lee from Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity along with a panel of delegates will share inspiring images and stories of resistance from Honduran community partners in their defense of land and life, and discuss how we can support their resistance.

The program will be happening during Buena Vista United Methodist Church’s 60th Anniversary Spring Bazaar. Come early to enjoy food / music

This insurgent community is a stronghold of grassroots Lavalas resistance and the scene of a state-sponsored massacre of hundreds of people last November. You will hear a first-hand report about this ongoing human rights crisis which has been completely ignored by the United States, UN, international community, diplomats and the mainstream media. Monday, May 13

21. Monday, 10:00am – 12Noon, Speak Out: SB 1045 Conservatorship Vote at Rules Committee

SF City Hall, Room 263

1 Dr. Carleton B. Goodlett Pl.

SF

Urge Supervisors to vote “NO” on the implementation of SB 1045 in San Francisco!

The Board of Supervisors will be voting on whether or not they would like to implement the state Senate Bill 1045 in San Francisco. It must first go through the Rules Committee (which Supervisors Mar, Ronen, and Walton sit on) before it can be passed onto the full board for a vote.

SB 1045 would allow the city to create a new form of conservatorship, which moves us away from long standing practice of only placing people in locked facilities when they present a harm to self and others and instead using 8 detentions under the 5150 code as the criteria. This is a new legal process through which an individual can lose the right to make decisions about their housing, finances, and medical care. The bill targets homeless people with severe mental illness and substance addictions. While claiming to be a solution to chronic homelessness, this bill provides no funding for housing or mental health treatment.
