For the past 20 years, we have fought for human rights and civil liberties. And last year, together we created a new era in Congress as women, young people, and people of color revitalized the People’s House in one of the Democratic Party’s biggest victories in generations.
Today, the Speaker of the House is squandering the power we gave Democrats to stand as a resistance party. Some days it is just too much.Pelosi is tone policing bold voices like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on human rights as a kleptocratic aspiring fascist runs our country into the ground. Pelosi restrains the nominal opposition while the President stonewalls investigations and threatens extra-judicial arrest of millions of our neighbors. We can’t defer to this lawlessness, however much the Speaker would prefer to wait.
We are proud to stand with the new Congress and leaders including Reps. Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib. Our campaign demands immediate closure of the concentration camps along the border and those being prepared on military bases. We demand that children in private contracting facilities around the country are returned to their families. We demand humane asylum policies and we demand that Democrats return their contributions from the prison PACs that are greasing our slide into further depths of American fascism.
Thanks to our united efforts, today we will cross 1,000 unique donors to our 2020 campaign. This is the grassroots momentum that will allow us to build the campaign that will liberate San Francisco from more than 30 years of Pelosi’s fundraising-first neoliberal rule.
We are growing as more Americans wake up to the Speaker’s dedication to the nightmare status quo. As I told The Hill, “Members of Congress swear an oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. The greatest threat to our country is a domestic one, it’s in the White House. Every member of Congress swore an oath essentially to pursue impeachment at this point in time. Saying it’s off the table is basically like not showing up for work.”
Predictably, “Pelosi’s campaign did not return a request for comment from The Hill.”
Each day that Pelosi delays action on the Green New Deal, each day Pelosi delays single-payer Medicare-for-All healthcare for every American, each day Pelosi delays impeachment proceedings, the need for our campaign to triumph becomes clearer. Thank you for standing with us when it’s not easy.
