2. Thursday, 6:30pm – 9:30pm, Speak on Use of Force Policy at Police Commission Meeting

Online EventZoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88092590965
Phone: 669 900 9128 – press# if asked for ID
Meeting ID: 880 9259 0965
*Use raise hand function to speak from zoom or from phone press “*9” to raise hand.
Public Comment is Item 8, to speak on all the points below.  Item 9: Carotid Choke Hold
The fact that Sgt. Joseph Turner is leading this use of force work is deplorable…APTP has called out his horrific history – he murdered Richard Perkins alongside three other officers and has engaged in drunken disorderly conduct. We demand he be removed from the use of force policy work.

Item 10: New Crowd Management, Use of Force Restrictions and Mutual Aid Protocols
This is an opportunity for the commission to step in and engage with Community to create a new OPD General Order!
The policy OPD submitted to the Police Commission is not a new order as stated in the agenda. It’s the existing policy from 2013, and doesn’t respond to last week’s Police Commission unanimous order to OPD to bring a new policy (general order) that would end the use of tear gas and other militarized equipment against “unarmed citizens.”
Prohibit use by OPD of tear gas, other chemical agents, rubber bullets, and flash bang grenades at demonstrations until the Commission approves new policies for Crowd Control and Specialty Impact Munitions (which include tear gas, launchers, and flash bang grenades).

Item 11: Resolution Urging Civil Service Board To Reject Officers with Prior Misconduct
We agree with this concept and worry we’ve not had enough time to review to ensure there’s no loopholes.

Item 13: Use of Force Engagement
To go through all the components of the use of force policy with the community input you seek by September is not a realistic timeline, especially given the additional workload during this national crisis

3. Friday, 9:00am (PT); 12Noon (ET), How the US killed democracy abroad & the existential threat of Bill Barr’s Justice Department

Register: https://rightsanddissent.org/live/lunchtime-live-june26/?page=register&eType=EmailBlastContent&eId=c61eec25-1d91-4a99-a4fa-2897ed6b7cab

Join us for a special Lunchtime Live with Investigative Journalist Tim Shorrock.

Last month was the 40th anniversary of Gwangju Uprising, a pro-democracy mobilization in South Korea that was violently repressed. Tim will be discussing his decades-long efforts to expose US involvement in the repression of the democracy movement. Since 1996, Tim has received via FOIA over 4,000 declassified documents about the US role in the Gwangju Uprising, all of which he has made available online. Last month, he co-authored a piece with Injeong Kim “Two Days That Shattered Korean Democracy” outlining how recent revelations show that “the US response to a dictatorship’s repression in Gwangju in 1980 was even worse than we thought.” Tim will also be discussing his most recent piece for The Nation “How Bill Barr Became Trump’s Generalissimo.”

Tim is the author of  Spies for Hire: The Secret World of Intelligence Outsourcing. He has been covering the intersection of national security and capitalism since the late 1970s. In addition to being the first journalist to interview the NSA 4 whistleblowers, he has authored groundbreaking exposes of the Carlyle Group, the Bush administration’s failed attempt to privatize Iraq, and the AFL-CIO’s intervention in Chile and other countries during the Cold War.

4. Friday, 11:00am – 12Noon, The Stonewall Inn: Birthplace of the LGBTQ + Rights Movement

Online

Tune in on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/SanFranciscoLibrary

Celebrate Pride’s 50th Anniversary with the National Park Service. Catch scenes of NPS rangers and the Roving Ranger in the SF Pride Parade in 2016. Also, hear the moving personal story of the first NPS Ranger Jamie Adams at Stonewall National Monument and the importance of this location in the struggle for civil rights for the LGBTQ+ community.

The Stonewall Inn, a bar located in Greenwich Village, New York City, was the scene of an uprising against police repression that led to a key turning point in the struggle for the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ+) Americans. In a pattern of harassment of LGBTQ+ establishments, the New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn in the early hours of Saturday, June 28, 1969.

The initial raid and the riot that ensued in response led to six days of demonstrations and conflicts with law enforcement outside the bar, in nearby Christopher Park, and along neighboring streets. At its peak, the crowds included several thousand people.

Before the 1960s almost everything about living openly as a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ+) person was illegal.

6. Friday, 11:00am – 1:00pm, Black Lives Matter – Justice in San Francisco – Press Conference

SF City Hall
1 Dr. Carleton B. Goodlett Pl
SF

(Social distancing measures in place – wear a face covering)

Black San Franciscans need and deserve effective action in Justice reform at this critical time –
1. De-fund the police – fund critical needs in the Black community;
2. DOJ reforms – SFPD, state of California and City of SF have agreed to the federally defined reform measures – and they are still not done, not 1/3 complete. They MUST be completed;
3. The SF Police Officers Association (SF POA) has a long and sordid history of attacking the Black community and Justice efforts. We do not acknowledge any truth or sincerity in their current commitment to reform. We demand the POA be held to account and that they publicly comment on their history and culture of racism and attacks on the Black community.

8. Friday, 11:00am – 2:00pm, UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

Meet at:

SF Ferry Building
Embarcaderro
SF

Advocacy for Humankind is an organization that seeks to eradicate crimes of coordinated stalking through public awareness, education and advocacy for victims. Please see more about our organization at the end of this press release.

We are gathering outside the Ferry Building  and then we will line up along the Embarcadero in support of all victims and survivors of torture.

In March of 2020, Nils Melzer, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, published a report on psychological torture.

Melzer’s report defines psychological torture as including “all methods and circumstances that purposefully inflict, or intend to inflict, severe mental pain and suffering”. Methods cited in the report include the purposeful infliction of fear, depriving someone of control over their lives and disrupting a victim’s self-determination and autonomy; also procedures that directly target psychological needs such as security, self-determination, dignity, privacy (through constant audio-visual surveillance), social rapport and communal trust.

The report also states that “Sensory hyper-stimulation below the threshold of physical pain, such as constant bright light, loud music, bad odors, uncomfortable temperatures or intrusive “white” noise, induces progressively severe mental stress and anxiety, inability to think clearly, followed by increasing irritability, outbursts of anger and, ultimately, total exhaustion and despair.”

An alarming development that Melzer points to is “cybertorture.”
States, corporate actors and organized criminals, he says, “not only have the capacity to conduct cyber-operations inflicting severe suffering on countless individuals, but may well decide to do so for any of the purposes of torture while avoiding the conduit of the physical body.”

Sunday, June 28

21. Sunday, 11:00am – 2:00pm, Rally for Afro-American Unity and Economic Emancipation

Martin Luther King Swimming Pool

5701 3rd St.
SF

Malcolm X on June 28th 1964, upon his return from Africa, announced the formation of the Organization of Afro-American Unity (which was modeled after the Organisation of African Unity). That unity is needed more than ever as the many disparities adversely affecting African Americans and their communities are being highlighted. Without unity, we may miss our opportunity to create a lasting impact to benefit not only us, but the generations to come.

According to Dr. Claud Anderson’s PowerNomics, group economics is the first significant step towards gaining political power. He also states that our lack of political power is the primary reason for the many disparities that plague our communities. It is time to change that! Join us as we rally for Unity and Economic Emancipation!

Topics to include:
Jobs
Supporting existing black businesses
Garnering support and resources for community members to start businesses
Breaking into the tech industry
Police brutality and mass incarceration
Health disparities and access to quality foods

There will also be a PPE station with free masks, hand sanitizer and etc., and masks are highly encouraged!

24. Sunday, 2:00pm – 5:00pm, Drive for Justice Voter Registration Drive

Oakland

We’ll stage at 6 different TBD locations, and caravan to Libby’s and 5 council members’ homes

RSVP or check the Facebook event for updates on how to join in person or online

Yesterday five council members pushed through a budget devoid of public support and in direct opposition to the thousands of people in Oakland calling on them to divest from police

forces and invest in programs that really keep us safe.

The budget pushed forward by Councilmembers McElhaney, Taylor, Gallo, and Reid was brought to the council in the late afternoon of the 22nd, whichthey fast-tracked by manipulating procedures put in place due to COVID. And in a shocking move, Council President Rebecca Kaplan joined the moderates on the council to force through this pro-police, anti-public services budget.

After nearly unanimous public comment from thousands of constituents over multiple weeks calling for a cut of $150 million (50%) from the Oakland Police Budget — backed up by recommendations from the Oakland Police [Oversight] Commission — the alternate budget passed by Kaplan and the four moderates only cuts $2.5 million from OPD — less than 1%.

These gatherings will take place every Sunday at sunset via Zoom in both English and Spanish, and include an #HonorLivesLost facilitator and a rotation of experienced healers. They will also be live-streamed through the Ella Baker Center’s Facebook page. Organizers and advocates across the state have created this space so we can come together to mourn the lives of people we have lost and send light and love to families grieving the unnatural deaths of their loved ones

What to Bring:

1.) A candle
2.) Water
3.) A rock, stone, crystal, etc… something with weight
4.) Essential oil, herb, flower, or citrus… something to ignite the senses

Hosts: Ella Baker Center for Human Rights + 7 Other groups

Due to the sudden and dramatic spike in Covid cases in California, event organizers of the 7/1 Day of Rage have decided to make the primary focus of this action to be a car caravan.

We apologize to those that don’t have access to a vehicle, however we want to ensure the utmost health and safety of our community first and foremost. We are making arrangements for an alternate online rally that you can plug into remotely.

The San Francisco/Bay Area Chapter of Al-Awda, the Palestine Right to Return Coalition and the Palestinian Youth Movement and the Palestine Action Network call upon all Palestinians and supporters of freedom, equality, and justice – in Palestine and around the world, to protest the planned annexation of more Palestinian land. We call on the Palestinian community, and those engaged in indigenous/anti-colonial, anti-racist/anti-white supremacist struggles against state violence and racial oppression, to link arms and struggle together in an act of international solidarity!

On July 1st, Israel is set to begin the formal annexation of 30% of the West Bank. The West Bank has been occupied since 1967 and the settlements that exist there already are illegal by international law. These further encroachments on Palestinian land are unacceptable. Annexation is nothing new in Occupied Palestine; the entire Zionist project has depended on land and resource theft, the displacement of indigenous Palestinians, military occupation, imprisonment, and colonial violence. The continued expansions of Jewish-only settlements on occupied land, the US embassy move to Jerusalem, the so-called “Deal of the Century”, and the formalization of annexation are the latest manifestations of Zionist colonial rule.
