The University of California will no longer permit the use of “diversity statements” in hiring following a directive from the Board of Regents.
“Today, the UC Board of Regents directed the University to eliminate any required diversity statements for new hires,” Regents Chair Janet Reilly said in a statement. “While the University has no systemwide policies requiring the submission of diversity statements as part of employment applications, some programs and departments have used this practice in the past.”
The move was announced in a letter from UC Berkeley professor and university provost Katherine S. Newman to UC administrators and campus officials Wednesday. Newman’s letter clarifies that “stand-alone diversity statements will no longer be permitted in recruitments.”
These diversity statements typically ask applicants for their professional experience with or contributions to equity, diversity and inclusion. Since 2015, the UC system’s APM 210-1.d policy has emphasized the consideration of contributions to equal opportunity and diversity in hiring. The policy is thought of by many as a pivotal step in the proliferation of diversity statements at universities across the country.
This announcement comes late Wednesday night as the regents convene for three days in Los Angeles. While UC President Michael V. Drake announced a systemwide hiring freeze early in the day, he made no mention of this move.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
