No Tar Sands in Our Bay! – Phillips 66 Refinery in Rodeo, CA (Meet at Lone Tree Point in Rodeo)

Join us in demanding that no tar sands come into our beautiful San Francisco Bay! We will have a teach-in and a short march to the gates of the refinery where we will pray. Those willing to risk arrest will block the refinery gates.
About the project:
The Phillips 66 Refinery in Rodeo, CA is working on getting permits that would allow them to bring between 90 and 123 oil tankers filled with tar sands from Alberta, Canada. This project is directly related to the Trans Mountain pipeline that our First Nations relatives have been resisting. This year, the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau purchased this pipeline for $4.5 billion from Kinder Morgan which stopped the project due to the resistance. Tar sands crude cannot be cleaned from water. It has a higher sulfur content which corrodes refinery pipes – this may have been the issue which caused the Chevron Refinery in Richmond to explode in 2012, sending 15,000 residents to hospitals. The emissions from refineries processing tar sands are more toxic than conventional oil. This is a bad idea for the water, people living in Rodeo and surrounding areas, and the climate.
