Ajit Pai is the man planning to kill net neutrality. As Donald Trump’s chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), he wants to hand off control of the internet to the largest telecom companies.1 And next week, he is coming to San Francisco. Can you be there to protest outside Pai’s event and demand that he keep his hands off net neutrality?
Unsurprisingly, Pai isn’t coming to the Bay Area to talk about his wildly unpopular plan to end net neutrality. Instead, he will be visiting for a “fireside chat” with tech executives about bridging the digital divide for underserved communities. We can all agree that expanding opportunity online is important. The problem is, the FCC cannot bridge the digital divide without the Title II net neutrality rules that Pai wants to reverse. Title II is the legal basis that allows the FCC to ensure universal service – the principle that vital communications networks should be available everywhere and at an affordable cost.2 Title II also allows the FCC to ensure access for customers with disabilities.3 And Title II permits the FCC to require more transparency in customer billing and fees.4 By rolling back Title II net neutrality, the FCC would remove its own authority to help make the internet available and affordable to everyone. There can be no conversation about opportunity online without strong, enforceable open internet rules. So whether or not Chairman Pai wants to talk about net neutrality, we must bring the conversation to him. Can you join us to rally for net neutrality this Tuesday, Sept. 12? We will gather outside the venue where Pai will be speaking, with our own speakers, signs and visuals to send a message to press and the world: The Bay Area demands real net neutrality. The rally will include speeches by net neutrality champions, music and fun chants. We will also be delivering our comments directly to Chairman Pai so that he can’t ignore the overwhelming support for net neutrality. The Bay Area is home to an incredible diversity of communities and a rich tradition of organizing. All our communities depend on a free and open internet to innovate, organize and communicate. Under the Trump administration, our democracy depends more than ever on our ability to connect without censorship or interference. But if Chairman Pai kills net neutrality, our free speech will be at risk. Join CREDO along with our allies in the progressive movement including the ACLU of Northern California, Center for Media Justice, Color Of Change, Courage Campaign, Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Free Press Action Fund, Media Alliance, Tech Workers Coalition, The Utilities Reform Network (TURN) and 18 Million Rising. We will be providing signs, but we always encourage you to bring your own creative signs defending net neutrality.
