Stop Urban Shield

The Stop Urban Shield Coalition is mobilizing against the 2016 Urban Shield trade show scheduled for September 9 at the Alameda County Fair Grounds in Pleasanton, CA. Stop Urban Shield is a broad coalition of grassroots community and social justice organizations that have united against Urban Shield, a massive police, military, and first responder weapons expo and war games simulations.  As in previous years, the coalition is prioritizing leadership by groups which include people most impacted by militarized policing.

The Urban Shield trade show and war games bring together regional, national, and international militarized police units and emergency responders – including those from the Apartheid State of Israel – to acquire new surveillance technology and weapons, share tactics, and increase their capacity for state repression and violence.  In 2014 our coalition’s efforts successfully kicked Urban Shield out of Oakland. In response, the sheriff has moved the Urban Shield expo to Pleasanton, so our fight must continue.

Stopping Urban Shield would help send a clear message that communities across California do not want our emergency responses militarized and that we will not stand for the targeting, profiling, and repression so central to the violence of policing promoted by Urban Shield.

This year we are calling for a statewide mobilization to the Urban Shield trade show on September 9, in Pleasanton, CA.  Given that Urban Shield involves police units and emergency responders across the entire state, we want our organizing efforts to match that. We need you there to make this mobilization possible!

The coalition has identified Occupy San Francisco as an important part of this mobilization.  We hope that you will join us. To participate in the Stop Urban Shield Coalition’s statewide mobilization, we ask that you commit to the following three requests:

  • Commit your organization to participate in the action on Sept. 9th(we can talk with you about specific roles to play during the day)
  • Promote the mobilization through your networks
  • Commit to participate in one educational session about Urban Shield and our Coalition’s opposition to it (options include: attending a town hall information session, inviting a coalition member to speak to your members or staff; hosting your own information session for your organization with support from the coalition; attending a statewide webinar)

If your group is interested in sending a representative to regular planning meetings, please let us know.

If you are willing to participate in this important effort, please respond, confirming your participation. From there we will schedule an education session for your group and discuss roles you may be able to play on September 9th as well as ways to help spread the word about the mobilization.

I look forward to hearing from you!
