We do not lose sight that the sole reason Chief Scott has been brought to San Francisco and to this job he is now occupying is that
e the
eople demanded the resignation of his predecessor. Chief Greg Suhr was forced to step down on May 19, 2016, the day of the police murder of Jessica Nelson-Williams, following months of protest after the caught-on-camera police execution of Mario Woods, which ended the bloodiest year for killings by police in recent SFPD history. Luis Gongora Pat was also gunned down a month prior to Nelson-Williams, in April 2016. And Amilcar Perez-Lopez and Alex Nieto and so many others were murdered by police under Suhr’s reign. Also Suhr oversaw the SFPD during textgate, at first decrying the racist texts and promising termination for the perpetrators — and later backing off that statement and bringing NO consequences.
All of this is to say — these are the unique circumstances that bring Chief William Scott to San Francisco. No doubt the community which has suffered greatly and for far too long will be interested to know from the new chief what he perceives the differences will be under his tenure.
