You are invited to join our Tuesday CODEPINK CONGRESS Calling Party for a conversation on the current state of the blockade on Cuba, and how we can take action. Chat with peacemakers and experts Tuesday, May 17th at 5 pm PT/8 pm ET: At a time when the Cuban economy is reeling from a combination of U.S. sanctions and tourism losses due to COVID, Cuban migration to the U.S. has reached record levels. Cubans at home are suffering from tremendous shortages from food to medicine. While there was hope that the Biden administration would resume Obama-era steps towards normalization, instead President Biden has continued Trump’s policies of brutal sanctions. U.S. normalization groups are pushing to lift restrictions on travel, trade and money home (remittances), as well as removal of Cuba from U.S. list of state sponsors of terror. This Calling Party will feature introductory remarks by Medea Benjamin, co-founder of CODEPINK; Cole Harrison, executive director of Massachusetts Peace Action (MAPA); Maykayla Heiser of the CODEPINK Youth Peace Collective; and Calla Walsh, board member of MAPA. The four recently returned from a May Day Peace Delegation to Cuba & will report on the highlights of their trip & the impact of sanctions. FeaturingCarlos Lazo is a high school teacher from Seattle who founded the Cuban-American group Puentes de Amor (Bridges of Love) to normalize relations between the U.S. and Cuba. In 2020, he organized a 3,000-mile bike trek from Seattle to Washington DC and in 2021 he led a walking pilgrimage from Miami to Washington DC to advocate for lifting the sanctions on Cuba. He also started a global movement, during COVID, of anti-blockade caravans, the largest being in Miami, the home of rightwing Cubans who constantly send him death threats. Carlos has also been raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to send medicine and food to Cuba. His latest campaign with CODEPINK is sending powdered milk to all the pediatric hospitals on the island. |
