Extinction Rebellion<\/b>\u00a0(sometimes shortened as\u00a0XR<\/b>) is an international\u00a0social movement<\/a>\u00a0that aims to drive radical change, through\u00a0nonviolent resistance<\/a>\u00a0in order to minimise\u00a0species extinction<\/a>\u00a0and avert climate breakdown.[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Established in 2018 with about one hundred academics signing a call to action[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and launched at the end of October by Roger Hallam, Gail Bradbrook, Simon Bramwell and other activists from the campaign group Rising Up!.[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In November 2018, various acts of civil disobedience took place in London.[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The movement is unusual in that a large number of activists have pledged to be arrested and are prepared to go to prison,[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0similar to the mass arrest tactics of the\u00a0Committee of 100<\/a>\u00a0in 1961.<\/p>\n

Citing inspiration from\u00a0grassroots<\/a>\u00a0movements such as\u00a0Occupy<\/a>,\u00a0Gandhi\u2019s independence movement<\/a>, the\u00a0Suffragettes<\/a>,\u00a0Martin Luther King<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0civil rights movement<\/a>, Extinction Rebellion intends to rally support worldwide around a common sense of urgency to tackle climate breakdown.<\/sup><\/sup><\/p>\n
