(Photo: Marcus Yam\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<div>\n<p>While an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/views\/2018\/12\/18\/beto-we-hardly-knew-ye\">outsized chunk<\/a>\u00a0of the corporate media&#8217;s early 2020 coverage has been centered on the speculation and big\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2018\/11\/19\/beto-orourke-2020-fundraising\/\">donor enthusiasm<\/a>\u00a0surrounding\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/views\/2018\/12\/06\/why-progressive-texan-cant-get-excited-about-beto-orourke\">centrist<\/a>\u00a0Texas Rep. Beto O&#8217;Rourke&#8217;s possible White House bid, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/12\/18\/bernie-sanders-straw-poll-2020-elections-1067867\">new straw poll<\/a>\u00a0released on Tuesday found that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is far and away the leading presidential choice among progressives eager to take down President Donald Trump and forge ahead with a bold agenda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pullquote\">&#8220;If the senator runs (I hope he does), he will have the best organizing program of any 2020 candidate.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2014Winnie Wong, People for Bernie<\/p>\n<p>Conducted by Democracy for America (DFA)\u2014a political action committee with over a million members\u2014the survey found that Sanders topped the ever-growing list of potential Democratic candidates\u00a0 with 36 percent support, followed by former Vice President Joe Biden at 15 percent and O&#8217;Rourke at 12 percent.<\/p>\n<p>All other possible candidates included in the straw poll, including Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), earned less than 10 percent support.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Intercept<\/em>&#8216;s Ryan Grim argued that the DFA survey shows political elites may once again be underestimating Sanders, who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/08\/25\/bernie-sanders-nations-highest-profile-socialist-once-again-voted-most-popular\">consistently polls<\/a>\u00a0as the most popular politician in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Though Sanders emerged from the early survey as the strong front-runner, DFA executive director and incoming chair Charles Chamberlain said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/12\/18\/bernie-sanders-straw-poll-2020-elections-1067867\">statement<\/a>, &#8220;Progressive support in the 2020 Democratic primary is up for grabs and so is Democracy for America&#8217;s endorsement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the 2016 Democratic primary, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracyforamerica.com\/timeline\/dfa-endorse-bernie-sanders-for-president\">organization endorsed<\/a>\u00a0Sanders over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unlike 2016, no candidate has support strong enough for the Democratic Party establishment to clear the field, which means progressives will have an excellent opportunity over the next year to kick the tires on a wide range of different candidates and find the best one to take on Trump,&#8221; Chamberlain concluded.<\/p>\n<p>On social media, Sanders supporters touted the DFA poll as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WaywardWinifred\/status\/1075047376304422917\">further fuel<\/a>\u00a0for the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/12\/04\/laying-groundwork-2020-run-sanders-2016-staffers-launch-draft-bernie-campaign\">Draft Bernie<\/a>&#8221; 2020 campaign launched earlier this month by former staffers for the Vermont senator&#8217;s 2016 bid.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If the senator runs (I hope he does), he will have the best organizing program of any 2020 candidate,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WaywardWinifred\/status\/1075047376304422917\">declared<\/a>\u00a0Winnie Wong, founder of People for Bernie.<\/p>\n<p><em>This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>December 18, 2018\u00a0by Common Dreams &#8220;I think people in Washington are (again) underestimating the potential strength of a Sanders campaign (which could actually be part of his strength again).&#8221; by\u00a0Jake Johnson, staff writer Bernie Sanders at a campaign rally in Santa Monica, California.
