Sandra Lee Fewer that&nbsp;<strong>supports state legislation that would authorize local government bank charters<\/strong>. As reported by Tim Redmond in&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/48hills.org\/2019\/02\/a-step-towards-public-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>48 Hills<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cThe more cities get on board, the more pressure legislators will face to approve enabling legislation that would clear the way for a San Francisco public bank.<\/p><p>\u201cAnd&nbsp;<strong>the overwhelming support in this city suggests strongly that this is an issue whose time has come.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The vote followed a special joint hearing Monday held by the State Assembly Banking and Finance Committee, and a long line of speakers at City Hall who spoke in favor of the resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier in January, SF advocates met with unexpected&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SandraLeeFewer\/posts\/10155662887501557\" target=\"_blank\">overflow crowds<\/a>&nbsp;(Facebook link), including Sup. Fewer, for their&nbsp;<strong>People vs Wall Street<\/strong>&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/190975971823539\/\" target=\"_blank\">campaign launch<\/a>&nbsp;(Facebook link). The launch was covered by media outlet&nbsp;<em>El Techolote<\/em>&nbsp;and KALW public radio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ian Firstenberg at the&nbsp;<em>El Techolote<\/em>&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/features\/advocates-push-for-sf-public-bank-as-antidote-to-wall-street-greed\/\" target=\"_blank\">writes<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cThe coalition\u2019s primary goal is to take power from the capitalist establishment and give the people control over their own money. \u2026<\/p><p>\u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfpublicbank.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">SF Public Banks Coalition<\/a>&nbsp;co-founder&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/3OqUf6S9oss\" target=\"_blank\">Jackie Fielder<\/a>, who said she was inspired to help build the movement after witnessing firsthand the violence that erupted at Standing Rock in 2016, listed a few of the principles that would ideally guide the coalition\u2019s bank. They include: local control, community wealth building, public welfare, accountability and transparency, service to underserved communities, Indigenous rights, and of course public ownership.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>KALW public radio in San Francisco&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kalw.org\/post\/how-would-public-bank-work#stream\/0\" target=\"_blank\">talked<\/a>&nbsp;with Jackie Fielder and Matt Remle, co-founder of&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mazaskatalks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mazaska Talks<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cIndigenous water protectors have pushed for cities to divest taxpayer money from private banks that financially support oil pipelines, and proposed creating public banks instead. Advocates say a bank funded by \u2013 and accountable to \u2013 the public could better direct its resources to community-serving projects.
