Patty Murray\/Twitter)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The House Communications and Technology Subcommittee Tuesday passed the Save the Internet Act and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/qvyqvm\/bill-that-would-restore-net-neutrality-moves-forward-despite-telecoms-best-efforts-to-kill-it\">overcame the&nbsp;telecom industry&#8217;s last-minute efforts<\/a>&nbsp;to gut the bill\u2014all as more than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fightforthefuture.org\/news\/2019-03-26-breaking-bill-to-restore-net-neutrality-passes\/\">300,000 internet users&nbsp;<\/a>watched the proceedings throughout the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Politicians are slowly learning that they can&#8217;t get away with shilling for big telecom anymore.&#8221;&nbsp;<br>\u2014Evan Greer, Fight for the Future<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;So many people were watching an obscure subcommittee hearing on the Save the Net Act today that it broke the counter,&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fightfortheftr\/status\/1110597638355931136\">tweeted<\/a>&nbsp;the digital rights group Fight for the Future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The subcommittee vote came as major websites, individual internet users, and online communities all&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2019\/03\/26\/watch-campaigners-hope-viral-livestream-can-thwart-telecom-effort-sabotage-net\">spread the livestream of the hearing<\/a>&nbsp;across the web to stop telecom-backed lawmakers from weakening the Save the Internet Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The eruption of grassroots support had an impact, and the bill passed the subcommittee vote without issue,&#8221; Fight for the Future, which spearheaded the online campaign, said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/newswire\/2019\/03\/26\/bill-restore-net-neutrality-passes-key-subcommittee-vote-unscathed\">statement<\/a>. &#8220;In the end, only one amendment was introduced, and it was withdrawn after pushback from the majority, emboldened by the swell in activism.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Evan Greer, deputy director of Fight for the Future,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/qvyqvm\/bill-that-would-restore-net-neutrality-moves-forward-despite-telecoms-best-efforts-to-kill-it\">told<\/a>&nbsp;<em>Vice<\/em>&nbsp;that online attention on the hearing &#8220;really emboldened the Democrats and shored up the ones that were wobbling.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Save the Internet Act, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/newswire\/2019\/03\/26\/bill-restore-net-neutrality-passes-key-subcommittee-vote-unscathed\">unscathed<\/a>&#8221; by telecom amendments, now heads to the House Energy and Commerce Committee before reaching the full House for a vote&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-internet\/u-s-house-to-vote-to-reinstate-net-neutrality-rules-in-april-idUSKCN1R2268\">as early as next month<\/a>. If passed, the legislation would fully restore the net neutrality protections repealed by the Republican-controlled FCC in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Net neutrality is coming back with a vengeance,&#8221; Evan Greer, deputy director of Fight for the Future, said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/newswire\/2019\/03\/26\/bill-restore-net-neutrality-passes-key-subcommittee-vote-unscathed\">statement<\/a>. &#8220;Politicians are slowly learning that they can&#8217;t get away with shilling for big telecom anymore. We&#8217;re harnessing the power of the internet to save it, and any lawmaker who stands in our way will soon face the wrath of their constituents.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>In a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freepress.net\/news\/press-releases\/save-internet-act-passes-critical-milestone-house-communications-technology\">statement<\/a>, Candace Clement\u2014campaign director at Free Press Action\u2014applauded the House subcommittee for &#8220;taking the first step toward restoring net neutrality.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Support for this bill is growing every day, and it&#8217;s easy to see why,&#8221; Clement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.comparitech.com\/blog\/vpn-privacy\/supporting-net-neutrality\/\">Comparitech poll<\/a>&nbsp;released last week, 80 percent of Americans\u2014including 77 percent of Republicans\u2014support net neutrality protections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Companies like Comcast, of course, don&#8217;t care about any of that.
