(Photo: Andrew Harnik\/AP)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaders of the Congressional Progressive Caucus Wednesday condemned the DCCC&#8217;s new policy of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2019\/03\/22\/progressives-refuse-back-down-dccc-moves-kneecap-primary-challengers\">cutting off funds to primary challengers<\/a>, saying the rule will shut down &#8220;competition of ideas&#8221; and alienate the party&#8217;s grassroots base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Primaries are often the only way that under-represented and working class people are able to have a shot at pursuing elected office.&#8221;&nbsp;<br>\u2014Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/strong>&#8220;This unprecedented grab of power is a slap in the face of Democratic voters across the nation,&#8221; Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), the first-vice chair of the CPC, said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2019\/03\/27\/progressive-caucus-slams-dccc-head-cheri-bustos-for-her-assault-on-primary-challengers\/\">statement<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<em>The Intercept<\/em>&nbsp;after a closed-door meeting with DCCC chair Cheri Bustos (D-Ill.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2019\/03\/27\/dccc-cheri-bustos-progressives-1241010\">According to<\/a>&nbsp;<em>Politico<\/em>, the meeting\u2014also attended by CPC co-chairs Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) and Mark Pocan (D-Wis.)\u2014became &#8220;heated&#8221; as the progressive leaders said the DCCC&#8217;s rules would &#8220;blackball&#8221; important progressive vendors and strategists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s something even [former DCCC chair] Rahm Emanuel would not have done and is totally tone-deaf to the grassroots activists across our nation,&#8221; Khanna said. &#8220;Let&#8217;s be clear. If this policy remains in place, it will mean that we will not allow new Ayanna Pressleys or AOCs to emerge. It&#8217;s simply wrong.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Progressive organizations&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2019\/03\/22\/progressives-refuse-back-down-dccc-moves-kneecap-primary-challengers\">responded with outrage<\/a>&nbsp;when the DCCC unveiled the new rules last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The policy states that the DCCC &#8220;will not conduct business with, nor recommend to any of its targeted campaigns, any consultant that works with an opponent of a sitting member of the House Democratic Caucus.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite pushback from lawmakers and the grassroots, Bustos reportedly has no plans to reverse the new standard\u2014which could deprive progressive primary challengers of millions of dollars in funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I still think it&#8217;s an open conversation,&#8221; Pocan told&nbsp;<em>Politico<\/em>&nbsp;following the meeting with Bustos. &#8220;I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s done. I left it thinking there&#8217;s more to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Progressive advocacy groups said they will not cave to the party establishment, vowing to continue challenging conservative Democrats even it means being blackballed by the DCCC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.)\u2014who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/06\/26\/seismic-political-upset-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-landslide-over-wall-street-favorite\">unseated Wall Street-friendly Rep. Joe Crowley<\/a>&nbsp;in a primary last year\u2014urged the DCCC to scrap the policy in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2019\/03\/27\/dccc-cheri-bustos-progressives-1241010\">comments to reporters<\/a>&nbsp;on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Primaries are often the only way that under-represented and working class people are able to have a shot at pursuing elected office,&#8221; Ocasio-Cortez said. &#8220;I think that it can reduce the odds of us getting really strong representation.
