Photo courtesy Assemblymember Miguel Santiago.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>California\u2019s Assembly Bill 857, now called the Public Banking Act, sponsored by the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/californiapublicbankingalliance.org\/ab-857-california-public-banking-bill-text-digest-and-fact-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\">California Public Banking Alliance<\/a>&nbsp;has made it through three committees, including the \u201cnotoriously difficult\u201d Assembly Appropriations Committee, and is now up for a full vote on Assembly floor. Despite heavy opposition from Wall Street\u2019s biggest banks, the bill advanced with&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/californiapublicbankingalliance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/AB-857-Endorsers.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cunprecedented\u201d support<\/a>&nbsp;from over 100 major cities, unions, and grassroots organizations. The Chair of the Assembly Appropriations Committee, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, became the latest co-author to sign onto the bill,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/a53.asmdc.org\/press-releases\/20190517-public-banking-act-heads-assembly-floor-vote\" target=\"_blank\">saying<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cThis measure is long overdue.&nbsp;<strong>We need to take the profit out of banking in order to invest in our communities that have been left behind by Wall Street.<\/strong>&nbsp;This approach to public banking allows our local governments to explore forming their own local or regional public banks.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Joint author Assemblymember Miguel Santiago&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SantiagoAD53\/status\/1130573988780945408\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a>, \u201cNo one works harder to fight Wall Street and pass the Public Banking Act than this incredible coalition. #AB857 #PublicBanksNow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tireless efforts of advocates has made it possible for public banking to enter the mainstream and it\u2019s fast becoming common knowledge.
