After 1508, the election was sufficient to acquire the Imperial title.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_V,_Holy_Roman_Emperor\">Charles V<\/a>&nbsp;was the last person to be a crowned Emperor (elected 1519, crowned 1530); his successors were only elected Emperors by the electoral college, each being titled &#8220;Elected Emperor of the Romans&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_language\">German<\/a>:&nbsp;<em>erw\u00e4hlter R\u00f6mischer Kaiser<\/em>;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latin_language\">Latin<\/a>:&nbsp;<em>electus Romanorum imperator<\/em>). In practice, election by the princely electoral college was merely a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/De_jure\">de jure<\/a>&nbsp;requirement.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/De_facto\">De facto<\/a>&nbsp;the Imperial throne followed the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Order_of_succession\">order of succession<\/a>&nbsp;of the Austrian&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/House_of_Habsburg\">House of Habsburg<\/a>: every emperor from 1440 onwards came from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/House_of_Austria\">House of Austria<\/a>&nbsp;except for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_VII,_Holy_Roman_Emperor\">Charles VII<\/a>&nbsp;(r. 1742\u20131745) and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Francis_I,_Holy_Roman_Emperor\">Francis I<\/a>&nbsp;(r. 1745\u20131765), both of whom were related to the Habsburgs by blood and\/or marriage. The Electors merely ratified such inheritance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dignity of Elector carried great prestige and was considered to be second only to that of King or Emperor.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prince-elector#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The Electors had exclusive privileges that were not shared with the other princes of the Empire, and they continued to hold their original titles alongside that of Elector. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heir_apparent\">heir apparent<\/a>&nbsp;to a secular prince-elector was known as an&nbsp;<strong>electoral prince<\/strong>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_language\">German<\/a>:&nbsp;<em>Kurprinz<\/em>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
