The Prince-electors<\/strong> (German<\/a>: Kurf\u00fcrst<\/em> (listen<\/a> (help<\/a>\u00b7info<\/a>)), pl. Kurf\u00fcrsten<\/em>, Czech<\/a>: Kurfi\u0159t<\/em>, Latin<\/a>: Princeps Elector<\/em>) of the Holy Roman Empire<\/a>, or Electors<\/strong> for short, were the members of the electoral college<\/a> that elected the Holy Roman Emperor<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the 13th century onwards, the Prince-Electors had the privilege of electing the monarch<\/a> who would receive the coronation<\/a> at the hands of the Pope<\/a>. After 1508, the election was sufficient to acquire the Imperial title. Charles V<\/a> was the last person to be a crowned Emperor (elected 1519, crowned 1530); his successors were only elected Emperors by the electoral college, each being titled “Elected Emperor of the Romans” (German<\/a>: erw\u00e4hlter R\u00f6mischer Kaiser<\/em>; Latin<\/a>: electus Romanorum imperator<\/em>). In practice, election by the princely electoral college was merely a de jure<\/a> requirement. De facto<\/a> the Imperial throne followed the order of succession<\/a> of the Austrian House of Habsburg<\/a>: every emperor from 1440 onwards came from the House of Austria<\/a> except for Charles VII<\/a> (r. 1742\u20131745) and Francis I<\/a> (r. 1745\u20131765), both of whom were related to the Habsburgs by blood and\/or marriage. The Electors merely ratified such inheritance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dignity of Elector carried great prestige and was considered to be second only to that of King or Emperor.[1]<\/a><\/sup> The Electors had exclusive privileges that were not shared with the other princes of the Empire, and they continued to hold their original titles alongside that of Elector. The heir apparent<\/a> to a secular prince-elector was known as an electoral prince<\/strong> (German<\/a>: Kurprinz<\/em>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
