During his presidency, he played a key role in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nazi\">Nazi<\/a> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Machtergreifung\">Machtergreifung<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;in January 1933 when, under pressure from advisers, he appointed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adolf_Hitler\">Adolf Hitler<\/a>&nbsp;as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chancellor_of_Germany\">Chancellor of Germany<\/a>.
