The Ohlone Shellmound in West Berkeley, partially destroyed in the 1950s, is in danger of total destruction as part of a new development. This culturally significant site is in immediate danger

Corrina Gould will speak.

About the Ohlone Shellmound: One of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 2020 “11 Most Endangered Places.” The West Berkeley Shellmound is one the most important and earliest known Ohlone settlements on the shores of San Francisco Bay, with a village dating back 5,700 years, this site served as a burial and ceremonial ground, as well as a lookout and communications site, with the repository of shells, ritual objects, and artifacts forming a massive mound. When Spanish missions began enslaving Ohlone people, many remaining villagers fled. Shell material was later removed by Gold Rush settlers to fertilize farms and line streets. The site was mapped in 1907, and UC Berkeley archaeologists removed 95 human burials and 3,400 artifacts before the shellmound was leveled in the 1950s.Today, the site is still an active place of Ohlone prayer and ceremony, and burials remain under the surface throughout the area–currently a paved parking lot. Although plans to build a large condo project on the site are now on hold, the privately owned site’s future is uncertain.

Host: California Preservation Foundation

Info: Save Ohlone Heritage: West Berkeley Shellmound | Facebook

2. Since March 2020, there have been at least five incidents in which Black individuals were held at gunpoint or shot with lethal or potentially lethal munitions.

Berkeley Copwatch invites you to see and hear for yourself whether Berkeley Police officers are really as expert at “de-escalating” incidents as they so often proclaim.

During the event, some of the people who were targeted by BPD will share their stories. Evidence will be presented regarding each of the five incidents, and we will be joined by members of the NAACP, Berkeley Community Safety Coalition, and National Lawyers Guild as we analyze these incidents.

Troubling questions arise:

– Why is there so little time between when officers arrive on scene and when they deploy force?

– Is there any accountability from the department when they use force in this way? Have any officers been disciplined?

– What has the department done to address the issues of racial profiling and racist policing?

Despite the department’s claims that they employ “progressive” policing tactics, these five incidents clearly show a pattern of BPD unnecessarily escalating interactions and using or threatening to use deadly force.

Host: Berkeley Copwatch

Info: (1) Behind the Mask: Community Forum on Racist Policing in Berkeley During COVID-19 | Facebook / Behind the Mask: community forum on racist policing in Berkeley during COVID-19 : Indybay

Thursday, February 4

12. Wide-ranging and inclusive, this book examines a diversity of Black women, including cisgender and transgender women, rich and poor, educated and uneducated, reformers, enslaved women, artists, activists, imprisoned women leaders, and everyday people. A critical survey of their complex legacy, A Black Women’s History of the United States considers not only the exploitation and victimization of Black Women, but also their undeniable and substantial contributions to the country since its inception.

Info: Daina Ramey Berry & Kali Nicole Gross: Black Women’s History of the US : Indybay

16.
