James B. Eldridge, and Reps. Mike Connolly and Nika Elugardo after a great deal of focused\u00a0work by advocates at\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/publicbankinginstitute.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1e32ea6ff727c01612aad3ae1&amp;id=a4c95c426d&amp;e=2f2ed55557\">Massachusetts Public Banking<\/a>. Read the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/publicbankinginstitute.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1e32ea6ff727c01612aad3ae1&amp;id=a5426e2576&amp;e=2f2ed55557\">fact sheet<\/a>\u00a0about the bills and join the mobilization effort in that state.\u00a0\u00a0<br><br><strong>New Mexico&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a0new Public Banking Act, HB 236, passed the House Commerce and Economic Development Committee (HCEDC) yesterday, Feb 18, and heads next to the House Judiciary Committee. The twin NM bills,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/publicbankinginstitute.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1e32ea6ff727c01612aad3ae1&amp;id=e97ad23a2f&amp;e=2f2ed55557\">SB 313<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/publicbankinginstitute.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1e32ea6ff727c01612aad3ae1&amp;id=6c4801ac84&amp;e=2f2ed55557\">HB 236<\/a>, were introduced Feb 1 &amp; 2 respectively\u00a0by Sen. Jeff Steinborn and Reps.\u00a0Patricia Roybal Caballero\u00a0and Elizabeth\u00a0Thomson.\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/publicbankinginstitute.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1e32ea6ff727c01612aad3ae1&amp;id=5443efae04&amp;e=2f2ed55557\">Listen to radio station KSFR<\/a>\u00a0interview\u00a0folks from the powerhouse advocacy team at\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/publicbankinginstitute.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1e32ea6ff727c01612aad3ae1&amp;id=ef6e98b750&amp;e=2f2ed55557\">Alliance for Local Prosperity<\/a>. AFLEP reports:\u00a0With almost 80 people in attendance, the Committee heard favorable public comment from people of diverse ages and backgrounds from all over New Mexico. Expert witnesses Angela Merkert, Executive Director of AFLEP, and Dan Mayfield of Leverage Point, Inc. fielded lots of good, challenging questions from legislators for more than 3 hours!<br><br><strong>Hawaii<\/strong>\u00a0has two new bills. The first,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/publicbankinginstitute.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1e32ea6ff727c01612aad3ae1&amp;id=a8d88901e3&amp;e=2f2ed55557\">HB 240 HD1<\/a>, introduced Jan 22 by\u00a0Rep. Dale Kobayashi &#8212;\u00a0a former investment banker &#8212;\u00a0and eight co-sponsors, passed the House Committee on Economic Development with amendments on Feb 8 and now heads to the Consumer Protection &amp; Commerce Committee. This bill would\u00a0establish a working group to propose legislation with a report due by Jan 1,\u00a02022. The second,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/publicbankinginstitute.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1e32ea6ff727c01612aad3ae1&amp;id=e74a872bfb&amp;e=2f2ed55557\">HB 1103<\/a>,\u00a0introduced Jan 27 by Rep. Amy Perruso and many of the same representatives, establishes an implementation board to study the feasibility of a state-owned bank.\u00a0<br><br><strong>Philadelphia<\/strong>\u00a0City Councilmember Derek Green &#8212; another former banker &#8212; along with 11 other Councilmembers, introduced\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/publicbankinginstitute.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1e32ea6ff727c01612aad3ae1&amp;id=ed57979f2d&amp;e=2f2ed55557\">Bill 210005<\/a>\u00a0at Council&#8217;s first meeting of the year, Jan. 28. The ordinance would\u00a0create\u00a0a city-owned economic development financing authority to operate a public bank. The effort has received a good amount of positive press, such as this report from\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/publicbankinginstitute.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1e32ea6ff727c01612aad3ae1&amp;id=e24550793c&amp;e=2f2ed55557\">The Philadelphia Inquirer<\/a>. Advocates at the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/publicbankinginstitute.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1e32ea6ff727c01612aad3ae1&amp;id=d9fd596708&amp;e=2f2ed55557\">Philadelphia Public Banking Coalition<\/a>\u00a0have been hard at work furthering this effort.<br><br><strong>San Francisco&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/publicbankinginstitute.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1e32ea6ff727c01612aad3ae1&amp;id=f3c2082f0c&amp;e=2f2ed55557\">Ordinance 210078<\/a>, sponsored by Supervisor Dean Preston and 5 other Supers,\u00a0creates a working group to write a public bank business plan.
