The note, posted on Twitter on Saturday, April 24, on club letterhead, was addressed to Carlson with the subject line, \u201cRE: Your membership in the Dan White Society, and exaltation of the murder of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California and our club\u2019s name sake.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is both heinous and unsurprising that Tucker Carlson found a common cause with Dan White,\u201d Edward Wright, the club\u2019s co-president, wrote to The Chronicle via email. \u201cCarlson has made a career out of trafficking in the same privileged and reactionary sense of victimhood that led White to (the) murder of Harvey Milk and George Moscone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group was founded in 1976 as the San Francisco Gay Democratic Club and was the city\u2019s first Democratic club with the word \u201cgay\u201d in its name. The club is among the larger political groups in San Francisco and was renamed for Milk after his assassination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom championing the white nationalist \u2018replacement theory,\u2019 dehumanizing trans people, exalting police brutality, and vilifying social and cultural diversity, Carlson\u2019s rhetoric and White\u2019s violence are fruits of the same poisonous tree,\u201d Wright wrote. \u201cTheir culture war has a body count.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/datebook.sfchronicle.com\/movies-tv\/did-fox-news-host-tucker-carlson-name-drop-harvey-milks-killer-in-his-yearbook\">Did Fox News host Tucker Carlson name-drop Harvey Milk\u2019s killer in his yearbook?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Perhaps this is the story that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TuckerCarlson?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TuckerCarlson<\/a>&nbsp;was trying to get ahead of. In his college yearbook, he listed himself as a member of the &#8220;Dan White Society.&#8221;<\/p><p>Dan White was the man who murdered Harvey Milk.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TYklyfC8tS\">pic.twitter.com\/TYklyfC8tS<\/a><\/p><p>\u2014 Travis Akers (@travisakers)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/travisakers\/status\/1384882691838025732?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 21, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The yearbook screenshot was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/travisakers\/status\/1384882691838025732?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1384882691838025732%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdatebook.sfchronicle.com%2Fmovies-tv%2Fdid-fox-news-host-tucker-carlson-name-drop-harvey-milks-killer-in-his-yearbook\">tweeted on Wednesday, April 21<\/a>, by freelance journalist Travis Akers and has since been retweeted more than 19,000 times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Tuesday, April 20, episode of Fox News\u2019 \u201cTucker Carlson Tonight,\u201d the host spoke out against Washington Post media columnist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/people\/erik-wemple\/\">Erik Wemple<\/a>&nbsp;for allegedly contacting Carlson\u2019s college acquaintances and looking into his background. Carlson said that Wemple had pulled his college yearbook and called his classmates to \u201csee if we\u2019d done anything naughty at the age of 19.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next day, Wemple published a piece that was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2021\/04\/21\/tucker-carlson-despises-derek-chauvin-verdict\/\">critical of Carlson\u2019s on-air statements<\/a>&nbsp;after the guilty verdicts of former police Officer Derek Chauvin in his trial for the killing of George Floyd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A viral clip from the Tuesday episode showed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=6&amp;v=s0ayHFwKjOE&amp;feature=emb_logo\">Carlson laughing at guest Ed Gavin<\/a>, a former corrections officer from New York City, after Gavin called Chauvin\u2019s use of force against Floyd \u201cexcessive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/sfc-datebook-wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/MERa6ef064544372bd0776968dbb8415_Fox_News_Carlson-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2881917\"\/><figcaption>Carlson has drawn criticism online after a screenshot of his 1991 college yearbook affiliated him with a Dan White Society, which shares the name of the former San Francisco supervisor who assassinated Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone in 1978.Photo: Richard Drew, Associated Press<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Aker\u2019s tweet also referenced Wemple, saying: \u201cPerhaps this is the story that @TuckerCarlson was trying to get ahead of. In his college yearbook, he listed himself as a member of the \u2018Dan White Society.\u2019 Dan White was the man who murdered Harvey Milk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it is not known for certain if the Dan White referenced in Carlson\u2019s yearbook is the former San Francisco supervisor and police officer who assassinated Milk and Moscone in 1978, many Twitter users agreed with Akers\u2019 assessment and criticized the television host. Among those weighing in were comedian&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/billyeichner\/status\/1384919072442310656\">Billy Eichner<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SECNAV75\/status\/1384959750387945472\">former Navy Secretary Mabus<\/a>&nbsp;and Republican group&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ProjectLincoln\/status\/1384951073849417730?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1384951073849417730%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdatebook.sfchronicle.com%2Fmovies-tv%2Fdid-fox-news-host-tucker-carlson-name-drop-harvey-milks-killer-in-his-yearbook\">the Lincoln Project.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDan White was an assassin who murdered the mayor of San Francisco and a San Francisco city supervisor in cold blood,\u201d LGBTQ activist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/tv\/article\/When-We-Rise-a-story-of-past-struggle-and-a-10954771.php\">Cleve Jones<\/a>, who was a friend and community organizer with Milk, told The Chronicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said of Carlson: \u201cI just can\u2019t wrap my mind around the depth of his depravity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/sfc-datebook-wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/MER2018111220420952_carlsonmilk04xx-1024x835.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2881667\"\/><figcaption>Harvey Milk during his run for a seat in the state Assembly in May 1976.Photo: Gary Fong, The Chronicle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On Saturday, April 24,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2021\/04\/25\/tucker-carlson-is-chief-white-power-correspondent-at-fox-news-jim-acosta-says_partner\/\">CNN anchor Jim Acosta<\/a>&nbsp;called Carlson \u201cFox\u2019s chief white power correspondent\u201d on air and criticized his \u201ctoxic\u201d denial of systemic racism on the conservative network. Carlson has also repeatedly come under fire with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.queerty.com\/queerty-tv\/video\/E2N56Ju4?utm_source=queerty&amp;utm_medium=directlink&amp;utm_campaign=directlink&amp;utm_content=WATCH%3A+%3Cem+class%3D%22algolia-search-highlight%22%3ETucker%3C%2Fem%3E+%3Cem+class%3D%22algolia-search-highlight%22%3ECarlson%3C%2Fem%3E%27s+5+most+awful+attacks+on+LGBTQ+people\">allegations of homophobic remarks<\/a>, including a 2007 appearance on MSNBC where&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/daily-dish\/archive\/2007\/08\/tuckers-traumatic-bathroom-experience-steve-clemons\/225764\/\">he alleged a gay man \u201cbothered\u201d him in a restroom<\/a>&nbsp;when he was a high school student in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carlson went on to say that he \u201cwent back with someone I knew and grabbed the guy by the \u2014 you know \u2014 and grabbed him and hit him against the stall with his head, actually. And then the cops came and arrested him.\u201d In 2019, Media Matters for America compiled audio of Carlson\u2019s appearances on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2019\/03\/11\/fox-tucker-carlson-bubba-love-sponge-comments-spark-uproar\/3127666002\/\">\u201cBubba the Love Sponge\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;radio show between 2006 and 2011, where he used racist, sexist and homophobic language, including the word \u201cfag.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carlson has been the subject of at least three major boycotts since 2018 over comments he has made that have been characterized as racist, sexist and anti-immigrant. In 2020, after the host called Black Lives Matter demonstrators \u201ccriminal mobs,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/18\/business\/media\/tucker-carlson-advertisers-ratings.html\">advertisers including the Walt Disney Co. and Sandals<\/a>&nbsp;pulled commercials from Carlson\u2019s show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fox News has not responded to The Chronicle\u2019s requests for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Tony BravoTony Bravo is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.
