{"id":19238,"date":"2021-06-30T11:32:44","date_gmt":"2021-06-30T18:32:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/occupysf.net\/?p=19238"},"modified":"2021-06-30T11:32:46","modified_gmt":"2021-06-30T18:32:46","slug":"shadow-republican-joe-manchins-long-history-of-sabotaging-progressive-candidates-in-west-virginia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/occupysf.net\/index.php\/2021\/06\/30\/shadow-republican-joe-manchins-long-history-of-sabotaging-progressive-candidates-in-west-virginia\/","title":{"rendered":"Shadow Republican: Joe Manchin&#8217;s Long History of Sabotaging Progressive Candidates in West Virginia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cMany of the newspapers printed his smear sheet,&#8221; ex-WV Dem. gubernatorial nominee Charlotte Pritt says about Manchin allegedly pushing GOP ads that she was for teaching first graders about condoms<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<table class=\"wp-block-table\"><tbody><tr><td><a href=\"https:\/\/statuscoup.substack.com\/people\/756597-status-coup\">Status Coup<\/a><\/td><td>June 29, 2021  (stauscoup.substack.com<\/td><td><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">5<\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"https:\/\/statuscoup.substack.com\/p\/shadow-republican-joe-manchins-long\/comments\"><\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"><\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n\n<p>As the liberal punditariat on cable news and Twitter shriek louder for West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin to either help Democrats take unilateral action on infrastructure and the fillibuster\u2014or just join the Republican Party \u2014Status Coup has uncovered details of Manchin\u2019s decades-long role as a shadow saboteur helping Republicans in West Virginia defeat progressive candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe started Democrats for Underwood,\u201d Charlotte Pritt, a progressive candidate who beat Manchin in the 1996 West Virginia Democratic gubernatorial primary, told Status Coup about Manchin responding to his defeat by pushing her Republican general election opponent Cecil Underwood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought it was just the Democrats in West Virginia,\u201d Pritt said, noting that the state Democratic Party\u2014which has unofficially been controlled by Manchin since his Senate victory in 2010\u2014hasn\u2019t supported progressive candidates for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, Pritt said, the state party didn\u2019t lift a finger, and in some cases worked against, progressive candidates including 2010 Democratic congressional nominee Virginia Graf; 2012 Democratic congressional nominee Sue Thorn; 2016 Democratic congressional nominee Mike Manypenny; and most recently 2020 Democratic Senatorial nominee Paula Jean Swearengin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/statuscoup.substack.com\/subscribe?utm_medium=web&amp;utm_source=subscribe-widget&amp;utm_content=38177267\">Subscribe now<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manchin\u2019s sabotage of progressive candidates was most direct against Pritt, who served in the WV state house and senate in the 1980s and 90s as a strong progressive who was fiercely pro-union and strong on the environment in a state essentially run by the fossil fuel industry and corporate interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was leading in the polls going into the last weekend and so they brought in these negative ads,\u201d Pritt told Status Coup. The Republican ads, which Pritt alleged Manchin had a hand in, falsely accused her of salacious things like wanting to teach first graders about condoms and that she was for selling pornography to children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/cX6qd3ueQRw?start=49s&amp;rel=0&amp;autoplay=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;enablejsapi=0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"728\" height=\"409\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the State Senate, Charlotte Pritt proposed teaching first graders about condoms,\u201d the television ad&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/caselaw.findlaw.com\/wv-supreme-court-of-appeals\/1357781.html\">began<\/a>. \u201cSurprised? You shouldn&#8217;t be. Senator Pritt also voted to permit the sale of pornographic Videos to children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To this day, Pritt is disgusted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was really sick, stupid stuff that hardly anyone, if they were really thinking, would know that that\u2019s just ridiculous,\u201d she said. \u201cMany of the newspapers printed his [Manchin] smear sheet just as it was in the newspaper and op-ed pieces; so he worked with the establishment in these terrible assaults on my character.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pritt is certain that Manchin and the WV GOP worked together on the crippling ads against her in the homestretch of the campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was really kind of like a petulant spoiled child; I didn\u2019t realize it, but it was the first time that Joe Manchin had ever been defeated\u2014and by a woman. I think it was a great blow. He couldn\u2019t handle it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/statuscoup.substack.com\/p\/shadow-republican-joe-manchins-long?utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_content=share&amp;action=share&amp;token=eyJ1c2VyX2lkIjo2NTM4NTgsInBvc3RfaWQiOjM4MTc3MjY3LCJpYXQiOjE2MjUwNzc4MzQsImlzcyI6InB1Yi0xMDE1MSIsInN1YiI6InBvc3QtcmVhY3Rpb24ifQ.NeP0rNskwLSoHuB0IsWdpx9-bsXvdYD2uSeXYBuCQg8\">Share<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After leading in the polls going into the final week of the campaign\u2014before the alleged Manchin-engineered ads\u2014Pritt lost to Underwood by 36,648 votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After her defeat, Pritt<a href=\"https:\/\/law.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/district-courts\/FSupp2\/1\/590\/2569710\/\">&nbsp;sued&nbsp;<\/a>Republican National Committee for defamation over the smears. The response, according to Pritt, was the GOP pointing the finger at Manchin, not the ads, as the driving force behind her failed campaign due to Manchin pulling the strings behind Democrats for Underwood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, Pritt said what happened to her in West Virginia has continued 20 years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;\u201cI knew exactly what was happening to Bernie in 2016 and 2020 and especially what was happening to Tulsi Gabbard; that\u2019s the kind of treatment I got not being able to get coverage or endorsements by establishment newspapers in the state. Underwood had all the newspapers; just like we see now with progressives up against the establishment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/-fjqfVGq9yU?start=21s&amp;rel=0&amp;autoplay=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;enablejsapi=0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"728\" height=\"409\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Manchin also played a shadow role in helping incumbent West Virginia Republican Senator Shelley Moore Capito defeat progressive Democratic nominee Paula Jean Swearengin in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cManchin pretty much has control of the party,\u201d Swearengin told Status Coup. \u201cHe didn\u2019t even come out in support of me; he was actually behind-the-scenes, and even during the primary, advocating for Shelley Moore Capito. Swearengin pointed to since-deleted tweets from Manchin, who is close friends with Capito, during the general election that spoke positively about working with Senator Capito in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/statuscoup.substack.com\/p\/shadow-republican-joe-manchins-long?utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_content=share&amp;action=share&amp;token=eyJ1c2VyX2lkIjo2NTM4NTgsInBvc3RfaWQiOjM4MTc3MjY3LCJpYXQiOjE2MjUwNzc4MzQsImlzcyI6InB1Yi0xMDE1MSIsInN1YiI6InBvc3QtcmVhY3Rpb24ifQ.NeP0rNskwLSoHuB0IsWdpx9-bsXvdYD2uSeXYBuCQg8\">Share<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manchin\u2019s West Virginia Democratic Party also didn\u2019t lift a finger for Swearengin after she won the Democratic primary for Senate and shifted to the general election, Swearengin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MIA act by state Democrats flies in the face of the national Democratic Party\u2019s 2016 and 2020 megaphone that screamed at progressives to unite with establishment candidates like Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden to defeat Donald Trump in the general election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe state party pretty much ignored Paula, which is the biggest indicator that Manchin had a hand in Capito winning because they just completely shut her out,\u201d Kaylen Barker, policy adviser for Swearengin\u2019s Senate campaign, told Status Coup. The state party, she added, wouldn\u2019t even let Swearengin speak at events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swearengin\u2014the daughter and granddaughter of coal miners who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/revolt-in-west-virginias-coal-country-627943\/\">had fought for years&nbsp;<\/a>for safe mountaintop coal removal\u2014was also shut out from speaking at union halls with close ties to Manchin.
