(Image: Climate Reanalyzer)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;With everything going on in the world right now, the dual polar climate disasters of 2022 should be the top story&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/article_author\/public\/2021-06\/brett-wilkins-200x200.jpg?h=55541bb6&amp;itok=st0jtEJy\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/brett-wilkins\">BRETT WILKINS<\/a>  March 20, 2022  (CommonDreams.org)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scientists expressed shock and<\/strong>&nbsp;alarm this weekend amid extreme high temperatures near both of the Earth&#8217;s poles\u2014the latest signs of the accelerating planetary climate emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This event is completely unprecedented and upended our expectations about the Antarctic climate system.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Temperatures in parts of Antarctica were 50\u00b0F-90\u00b0F above normal in recent days, while earlier this week the mercury soared to over 50\u00b0F higher than average\u2014close to the freezing mark\u2014in areas of the Arctic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stefano Di Battista, an Antarctic climatologist, tweeted that such record-shattering heat near the South Pole was<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pinturicchio_60\/status\/1504445209647669250\">&nbsp;&#8220;unthinkable&#8221;&nbsp;<\/a>and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pinturicchio_60\/status\/1504720715647442952\">&#8220;impossible.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Antarctic climatology has been rewritten,&#8221; di Battista wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The joint French-Italian Concordia research station in eastern Antarctica&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pinturicchio_60\/status\/1504720715647442952\">recorded<\/a>&nbsp;an all-time high of 10\u00b0F on Friday.
