Experts say that&#8217;s largely because Canada has very strict gun laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What happened in Uvalde, Texas?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/kidsnews\/content\/Uvalde_MAP.png\" alt=\"A map showing, Canada, the U.S., Mexico and Uvalde, Texas\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Uvalde is home to about 16,000 people and is located about an hour\u2019s drive from the border with Mexico. (Graphic design by Philip Street\/CBC)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday, the 600 students at Robb Elementary were getting ready to celebrate the end of the school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The attack happened in a fourth-grade classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/kidsnews\/content\/Texas-shooting-victims-May-2022.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the students and teachers who are being remembered. (Image credit: Family handouts\/Reuters)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The person responsible for the shooting was killed by a Border Patrol officer at the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police are still investigating to understand why the shooting happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the tragic incident, people have come together in person and online to remember the victims and share their grief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Texas singer and actor Selena Gomez is one of many celebrities who have spoken out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/kidsnews\/content\/2_Tweet_SelenaGomez_TexasSchoolShooting.png\" alt=\"A tweet from Selena Gomez. I'm thinking of the parents, the families, the friends, the classmates, and the co-workers whose lives have been forever changed - Canadians are mounrning with you and are here for you.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Just wrong,\u2019 says U.S. president<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There have been 27 school shootings in the U.S. this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Politicians and celebrities are calling for stricter gun laws to prevent these incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhy do we keep letting this happen?\u201d asked U.S. President Joe Biden in a speech following the shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/kidsnews\/content\/Texas-shooting-Biden-May-2022.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. President Joe Biden speaks to the media following the shooting in Uvalde on May 24. (Image credit: Manuel Balce Ceneta\/The Associated Press)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of the reason is something called the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which dates back to 1791.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means that Americans have the right to own and carry guns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/kidsnews\/post\/not-again-black-teens-want-change-following-buffalo-attacks\">\u2018Not again\u2019: Black teens want change following Buffalo attacks<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Glenn Hanna, a former RCMP officer who teaches about crime at Ontario\u2019s Guelph-Humber University, said that right was born out of the American Revolution, which took place more than 200 years ago, from 1775-1783.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During that war, people took up arms to fight for independence from the British.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat is their culture, to always have arms, to be prepared to overthrow a government that has gotten out of control,\u201d said Hanna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guns are part of their \u201ccultural makeup,\u201d said Wayne MacKay, a retired law professor at Nova Scotia\u2019s Dalhousie University.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHaving guns is a basic individual right\u201d for people in the U.S., he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But many in the U.S., including politicians and celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, are calling for the laws to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/kidsnews\/content\/1_Tweet_KimK_TexasSchoolShooting.png\" alt=\"A tweet from Kim Kardashian: There is no excuse or justification for what happened yesterday. The current laws in our country around gun control are not protecting our children. We have to push law-makers to enact laws that are fitting in today's world.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe idea that an 18-year-old kid can walk into a store and buy two assault weapons, it\u2019s just wrong,\u201d said Biden in his speech. \u201cWhat in God\u2019s name do you need assault weapons for but to kill someone?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assault weapons are the kinds of guns that are often used in wars, which allow the shooter to fire multiple bullets one after the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But many Americans see stricter gun laws as infringing on their rights, and some politicians have been blocking the laws from changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the shooting was a mental health issue, not a gun issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/kidsnews\/post\/watch-do-you-know-your-rights-kids-speak-out-on-national-child-day\/\">WATCH \u2014 Do you know your rights? Kids speak out on National Child Day<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How safe are kids in Canada?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The most recent shooting at a school in Canada happened in February at a high school in Scarborough, Ontario, in which one person, an 18-year-old, was targeted and killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that was the first deadly school shooting in Canada in six years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, experts say schools in Canada are safe from gun violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? Well, it\u2019s very difficult for anyone, not just young people, to get guns in this country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/kidsnews\/content\/Texas-shooting-sign-May-2022.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A sign with the names of the victims is held during a vigil on May 25 in Uvalde. (Image credit: Marco Bello\/Reuters)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, Canadian law makes it difficult to have assault-style weapons, \u201cparticularly multiple firing kinds of weapons, of the kinds that are often used in these tragedies,\u201d said MacKay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Canada, anyone who wants to own a gun has to go through several steps that take time, such as taking a course, getting a licence, having a background check and registering your weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All guns have to be stored safely so they can\u2019t be easily accessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People who want a handgun have to have a specific reason for it, said Hanna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people in Canada own guns for hunting purposes, said MacKay, such as rifles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/kidsnews\/post\/watch-islamophobia-and-what-is-being-done-to-stop-it\">WATCH \u2014 Islamophobia and what\u2019s being done to stop it<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Feeling scared? That\u2019s normal<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Rebecca Pillai Riddell, the child psychologist, said it\u2019s normal to feel scared, anxious or even angry when you hear news like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will never make sense that bad things happen, she said, and it\u2019s OK to talk about it with an adult and share your feelings, but she doesn\u2019t recommend dwelling on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJust because something possibly could happen doesn&#8217;t mean it probably will happen,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/kidsnews\/content\/Texas-shooting-hands-May-2022.jpg\" alt=\"People stand in a circle holding hands.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of the community gather at the City of Uvalde Town Square for a prayer vigil to honour the victims.
