(Photo: Bertrand Guay\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The president of far-right National Rally, meanwhile, celebrated a &#8220;historic breakthrough&#8221; as Le Pen&#8217;s xenophobic party won a record 89 seats.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/article_author\/public\/2021-06\/kenny-stancil-commondreams-bw-200x200.png?h=55541bb6&amp;itok=y1MfFltz\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/kenny-stancil\">KENNY STANCIL<\/a> June 20, 2022 (CommonDreams.org)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>France&#8217;s new left-wing coalition<\/strong>&nbsp;picked up enough votes during Sunday&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/france\/20220619-live-france-votes-in-parliamentary-election-second-round\">legislative elections<\/a>&nbsp;to help deny President Emmanuel Macron the absolute majority he needed to ram through his unpopular austerity agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Macron&#8217;s neoliberal alliance Ensemble won the most seats in the National Assembly with 245 but fell well short of the 289 needed to control parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the New Ecological and Social People&#8217;s Union (NUPES)\u2014the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/05\/05\/once-unthinkable-french-left-forms-coalition-challenge-macron-parliament\">recently formed coalition<\/a>&nbsp;led by leftist MP Jean-Luc M\u00e9lenchon\u2014won 131 seats, more than doubling the combined number of representatives that its four parties had in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NUPES, which brings together&nbsp;M\u00e9lenchon&#8217;s France Unbowed, the center-left Socialist Party, French Communist Party, and Greens, campaigned on lowering the retirement age from 62 to 60,&nbsp;hiking the minimum wage, and freezing prices on essential products\u2014in sharp contrast to Macron&#8217;s alliance, which is trying to raise the retirement age to 65 and&nbsp;has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/france\/20220311-trickle-down-in-drips-and-drops-the-french-economy-after-five-years-under-macron\">reduced<\/a>&nbsp;the corporate tax rate,&nbsp;exacerbating economic inequality and insecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The rout of the presidential party is complete and no clear majority is in sight,&#8221; represents an eleven-fold increase in representation for the xenophobic party of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/04\/24\/neoliberal-macron-wins-french-election-far-right-le-pen-increases-vote-share\">presidential runner-up<\/a>&nbsp;Marine Le Pen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to pushing a pro-corporate agenda, Macron&#8217;s pursuit of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/international-politics\/french-election-2022\/2022\/02\/emmanuel-macron-wont-let-the-right-monopolise-immigration-issues\">anti-immigrant<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2022\/apr\/22\/macron-or-le-pen-many-french-muslims-may-say-neither\">anti-Muslim<\/a>&nbsp;policies has legitimized Le Pen&#8217;s reactionary ideas, progressive critics&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/04\/24\/neoliberal-macron-wins-french-election-far-right-le-pen-increases-vote-share\">say<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of Macron&#8217;s allies&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RimSarah\/status\/1538782557944573952\">portrayed<\/a>&nbsp;National Rally and NUPES as equally extremist. M\u00e9lenchon, by contrast,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/04\/11\/defeated-french-left-urges-voters-block-far-right-reelect-macron\">instructed<\/a>&nbsp;his supporters to &#8220;not give a single vote&#8221; to the far-right after he finished just behind Le Pen in the first round of April&#8217;s presidential race, thereby helping Macron win the runoff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conservative&nbsp;Les R\u00e9publicains, which picked up 61 seats, are &#8220;likely to become kingmakers,&#8221;&nbsp;<em>Reuters<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/macron-faces-tough-battle-control-parliament-france-votes-2022-06-19\/\">reported<\/a>, as Macron&#8217;s center-right majority seeks out potential allies to overcome France&#8217;s first hung parliament since 1988.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Macron is unable to form a stable alliance with&nbsp;Les R\u00e9publicains, which has a platform &#8220;more compatible with Ensemble than other parties&#8221; and could give the president an outright majority, he will be forced to &#8220;run a minority government that will have to negotiate bills with other parties on a case-by-case basis,&#8221;&nbsp;<em>Reuters<\/em>&nbsp;noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les R\u00e9publicains leader Christian Jacob said his party &#8220;will remain in the opposition but be &#8216;constructive,&#8217; suggesting case-by-case deals rather than a coalition pact,&#8221; the news outlet added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Macron&#8217;s government is not confining its search for possible legislative friends to the right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/france\/20220619-french-left-s-coalition-gamble-pays-off-in-legislative-elections-but-unity-challenges-loom\">According to<\/a>&nbsp;<em>Agence France Presse<\/em>, &#8220;Senior Macron officials were on Sunday already trying to drive a wedge through the different factions of the NUPES alliance,&#8221; accusing&nbsp;France Unbowed of being too rigidly radical and adversarial in a bid to peel off more moderate Socialists and Greens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There are moderates on the benches, on the right, on the left,&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/macron-faces-tough-battle-control-parliament-france-votes-2022-06-19\/\">said<\/a>&nbsp;government spokesperson Olivia Gregoire. &#8220;There are moderate Socialists and there are people on the right who, perhaps, on legislation, will be on our side.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If legislative gridlock persists, Macron could eventually call a snap election.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Left-wing MP Jean-Luc M\u00e9lenchon, leader of the New Ecological and Social People&#8217;s Union, delivers a speech in Paris on June 19, 2022 after initial results came in during the second round of France&#8217;s parliamentary elections.
