Washington blocks security council resolution supported by 12 member countries, with two abstentions including UK<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The US has vetoed a Palestinian request to the United Nations security council for full UN membership, blocking the world body\u2019s recognition of a Palestinian state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vote in the 15-member security council was 12 in favor, the US opposed and two abstentions, the UK and Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US officials had been hoping Washington could avoid use of its veto if other states objected to a draft resolution before the council recommending the \u201cState of Palestine be admitted to membership of the United Nations\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the vote, diplomats said the US mission had been trying to convince one or two other council members to abstain, to mitigate Washington\u2019s isolation on the issue, but American officials said they were resigned to having to wield the US veto once more in support of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington\u2019s position is that the emergence of a Palestinian state had to be the outcome of negotiations on all aspects of a Middle East peace settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe United States continues to strongly support a two-state solution. This vote does not reflect opposition to Palestinian statehood, but instead is an acknowledgment that it will only come from direct negotiations between the parties,\u201d deputy US ambassador to the UN, Robert Wood, told the council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision to veto the request drew rebukes from across the region. The Palestinian presidency condemned the US veto as \u201cunfair, unethical and unjustified\u201d, while the Egyptian foreign ministry said it regretted the inability of the security council to enable full Palestinian membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hamas said it strongly condemned America\u2019s position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explaining the UK abstention, the British envoy to the UN, Barbara Woodward, said: \u201cWe believe that such recognition of Palestinian statehood should not come at the start of a new process, but it doesn\u2019t have to be at the very end of the process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woodward added: \u201cWe must start with fixing the immediate crisis in Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel\u2019s foreign minister said he commended the US for casting the veto, adding that \u201cterrorism will not be rewarded\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Palestinians currently have non-member observer status, granted by the UN general assembly in 2012<\/a>. An application to become a full member with voting rights would have to be approved by the security council and two-thirds of the general assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRecent escalations make it even more important to support good-faith efforts to find lasting peace between Israel and a fully independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state,\u201d Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, the UN secretary general, told the council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFailure to make progress towards a two-state solution will only increase volatility and risk for hundreds of millions of people across the region, who will continue to live under the constant threat of violence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guterres also said that Israel\u2019s commitment to improving aid access to the Gaza Strip has had limited or no impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cApparent progress in one area is often cancelled out by delays and restrictions elsewhere,\u201d the secretary general said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor example, although the Israeli authorities have cleared more aid convoys, those clearances are often granted when it is too late in the day to make deliveries and return safely,\u201d he explained. \u201cSo the impact is limited, and sometimes nil.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
