The deal they reached included a promise to review the university\u2019s investments and seek \u201cethical alternatives\u201d if needed&nbsp;\u2014 but also an unprecedented academic boycott of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CSU Chancellor Mildred Garcia\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/us-world\/article\/sonoma-state-president-leave-brokering-deal-19461237.php\">labeled Lee\u2019s action \u201cinsubordination\u201d<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday and quickly named an acting president. On Friday,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.calstate.edu\/csu-system\/news\/Pages\/chancellor-statement-sonoma-update-may-2024.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Garcia announced<\/a>\u00a0that Lee \u201chas informed me of his decision to retire.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee had been in the president\u2019s role for less than two years, following a 28-year career as an administrator and business professor at Sacramento State. He came out of retirement in 2022 to take over at Sonoma State when former President Judy Sakaki&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/bayarea\/article\/Sonoma-State-University-president-announces-17223630.php\" class=\"\">resigned amid sexual harassment and retaliation allegations<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But after announcing an agreement Tuesday that was celebrated by pro-Palestinian student protesters because it singled out Israel&nbsp;\u2014 and included a promise to elevate the activists to advisors who would hold administrators accountable for complying with the boycott of the Jewish state&nbsp;\u2014 Lee encountered swift backlash from Jewish leaders, including state Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYesterday the President of&nbsp;Sonoma State University aligned the campus with BDS (the boycott, divest and sanction) movement whose goal is the destruction of Israel, home to (7 million) Jews,\u201d Wiener&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Scott_Wiener\/status\/1790775077228965994\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"\">posted Wednesday<\/a>&nbsp;on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He and Assembly Member Jesse Gabriel, D-Encino (Los Angeles County), co-chairs of the state Legislature\u2019s Jewish Caucus, thanked Garcia on Thursday for addressing the issue quickly, and said that the state-funded university\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CAJewishCaucus\/status\/1790912005358203045\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cendorsement of an academic boycott was totally unacceptable.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The accord struck by Lee\u2019s administration went beyond those reached with protesters at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/article\/s-f-state-agrees-reexamine-investments-19460240.php\" class=\"\">San Francisco State<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/california\/article\/sacramento-state-revises-investment-policy-avoid-19446646.php\" class=\"\">Sacramento State<\/a>, which focused not on any one nation, but on examining financial ties with companies or regions of the world that violate human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u200bOur role as educators is to support and uplift all members of the California State University,\u201d Garcia said Thursday in her statement announcing the disciplinary action. \u201cThe heart and mission of the CSU is to create an inclusive and welcoming place for everyone we serve\u200b, not to marginalize one community over another.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sonoma president\u2019s action also caught the attention of House Republicans who are targeting university leaders for any perceived inattention to campus antisemitism.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAny university president who caters to a lawless mob must be removed immediately,\u201d Rep. Kevin Kiley said on Thursday after Lee was sidelined.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right wing politicians have labeled the antiwar protesters \u201cantisemitic radicals\u201d and declared the protests sweeping the nation to be \u201cantisemitic college chaos.\u201d They have been calling university leaders to defend themselves in tense,&nbsp;McCarthyesque Congressional hearings. Next up are the heads of UCLA, Rutgers and Northwestern. Two college&nbsp;presidents, Liz&nbsp;Magill of the University of Pennsylvania and Claudine Gay of Harvard, resigned this winter in the wake of Congressional hearings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Columbia\u2019s president, Nemat Shafik, initiated a crackdown on campus protesters after her hearing in April, prompting a wave of student encampments this spring&nbsp;\u2014 including the one at Sonoma State. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240516132446\/https:\/\/www.sonoma.edu\/updates\/2024\/message-president-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"\">publicly apologized<\/a>&nbsp;on Wednesday evening and said he acted without the approval of Garcia or other CSU leaders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Lee\u2019s apology and his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240516205357\/https:\/\/www.sonoma.edu\/updates\/2024\/encampment-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"\">original announcement<\/a>&nbsp;had been available on the Sonoma State website Thursday but were gone by Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Garcia issued no update on the status of the agreement with the student protesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reach Nanette Asimov:&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:nasimov@sfchronicle.com\" class=\"\">nasimov@sfchronicle.com<\/a>; Twitter: @NanetteAsimov<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>May 17, 2024|Updated&nbsp;May 17, 2024 3:00 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/author\/nanette-asimov\/\">Nanette Asimov<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HIGHER EDUCATION REPORTER<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nanette covers California&#8217;s public universities &#8211; the University of California and California State University &#8211; as well as community colleges and private universities.
