NBC Bay Area reports that the Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA), which is managing the effort to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2023\/01\/18\/high-speed-rail-could-finally-be-coming-to-salesforce-transit-center-but-only-if-the-feds-kick-down-billions\/\">extend Caltrain to the Salesforce Transit Center<\/a>&nbsp;has been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcbayarea.com\/news\/local\/san-francisco\/caltrain-into-downtown-sf\/3542763\/\">awarded $3.4 billion from the Federal Transit Administration<\/a>&nbsp;to complete the underground tunnels connecting the two transit facilities. The TJPA was reliant on the federal money, and now they\u2019ve secured it. And the tunnel project has a new name, as they\u2019re now calling it \u201cThe Portal.\u201d &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They picked a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/14\/us-news\/plug-pulled-on-nyc-dublin-portal-for-now-over-bad-behavior\/\">funny week to call something \u201cPortal,\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;but that\u2019s the new shorthand name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.sfist.com\/2024\/05\/saleforce-portal-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Image:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tjpa.org\/salesforce-transit-center\">Transbay Joint Powers Authority&nbsp;<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A rendering of the finished product is seen above, and yes, the Caltrain will be heading into underground tunnels at Fourth and King streets. They\u2019ll arrive at the Salesforce Transit Center two floors below the street-level.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfexaminer.com\/news\/transit\/san-francisco-high-speed-rail-connection-boosted-by-billions\/article_5caf2088-0f23-11ef-91d9-934fe4357d4c.html\">As the Examiner explains<\/a>, \u201cThe massive undertaking would extend the Caltrain commuter rail line by 1.8 miles, dig 1.3 miles of underground tunnel, and construct two underground stations to bring Caltrain service from Fourth and King Streets to a six-level underground endpoint.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The whole project itself is running a $6.7 billion price tag, so the feds are basically covering half. Counting in the local and state money also lined up, the whole shebang is now two-thirds funded. \u201cThere\u2019s only a handful of projects in the United States that have that level of commitment,\u201d TJPA executive director Adam Van de Water told the agency at a meeting last week, per the Examiner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.sfist.com\/2024\/05\/DTX-alignment-map-7-22-SMALL--004-.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Image:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tjpa.org\/portaldtx\/about-portal\">Transbay Joint Powers Authority&nbsp;<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Though yes, that\u2019s $6.7 billion for an extension of\u2026 just nine blocks. But the whole thing is underground, hence the high cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s still not determined where the remaining $2.75 billion of that is coming from. The TJPA is hoping for another $1 billion from the state, but that\u2019s not guaranteed, considering the state is running a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2024\/05\/11\/saturday-links-california-faces-a-28-billion-budget-deficit\/\">$28 billion deficit<\/a>. The Examiner adds that state Senators Scott Wiener and Aisha Wahab are working on a bill that could raise funds through 2026 state tax ballot measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The station would be connected to the long-sought&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2024\/01\/24\/high-speed-rail-trains-still-seems-like-a-far-off-dream-but-designers-are\/\">California high-speed rail system<\/a>, which has of course been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2021\/10\/13\/sacramento-legislators-are-holding-up-high-speed-rail-project\/\">taking forever to build<\/a>. But that project&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hsr.ca.gov\/2024\/05\/16\/video-release-high-speed-rail-releases-spring-2024-construction-update\/\">has made progress<\/a>&nbsp;in recent months, with now more than 25 active construction sites in the Central Valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.sfist.com\/2024\/05\/caltrain-timeline.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Image:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfcta.org\/projects\/portal\">SFCTA<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest estimates still show that the Salesforce Transit Center connection is not expected to be finished until 2032 or 2033, should they even line up the money in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the way, this August will see the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2022\/08\/15\/its-been-four-years-since-salesforce-park-and-the-transit-center-opened-and-then-closed-and-opened-again\/\">five-year anniversary of the Salesforce Transit Center\u2019s opening<\/a>. That opening was famously marred by mishaps and delayed by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/09\/26\/651749245\/san-franciscos-new-2-billion-transit-center-is-shut-down-over-cracked-beam\">cracks in its steel beams<\/a>. Similar delays seem likely to happen with this expansion.
