Donald Trump\u2019s rallies are like emotional support meetings for him. His adoring fans\u2014some who travel hundreds<\/a> of miles to attend repeated rallies<\/a>-are only too eager to laugh at his stale jokes and cheer his tired lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s why Trump being \u201cloudly and consistently booed\u201d<\/a> \u2013as well as heckled–throughout his speech Saturday at the Libertarian Party\u2019s national convention in Washington, D.C. had to be so jarring for him. Trump had lobbied<\/a> for an invite to the event hoping to attract some of the attendees to support him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But instead, Trump was interrupted numerous times with passionate booing and angry hecklers yelling everything from \u201cLock him up\u201d to \u201cF**k you!\u201d As the NY Times reported, \u201cTrump appeared irked by the chaotic atmosphere,\u201d causing him to rush through his speech. And while Trump did attract some cheers when he nakedly pandered to the crowd, such as promising to appoint<\/a> a Libertarian to his cabinet if he wins, the headlines<\/a> across<\/a> the nation<\/a> <\/strong>told the story of Trump getting repeatedly booed and jeered unlike anything we\u2019ve ever seen before in this campaign. Just a few include The Washington Post\u2019s<\/a> front page article, \u201cTrump loudly heckled at Libertarian National Convention,\u201d<\/strong> NBC News\u2019s<\/a> \u201cTrump booed and jeered at Libertarian National Convention\u201d<\/strong> and Reuters\u2019 \u201cTrump booed and heckled by raucous crowd at Libertarian convention.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, things got so rough for Trump that after he received a large salvo of boos when he urged the attendees to make him their 2024 presidential nominee\u2014like a comedian bombing who lashes out at the audience-<\/strong>-he mocked the Libertarian party saying<\/a> either nominate him or, \u201cKeep getting your three percent every four years.\u201d  (It could have been worse for Trump if the Secret Service didn\u2019t confiscate<\/a> \u201cnoisy\u201d rubber chickens –provided to attendees by a PAC supporting Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.–that apparently squawk<\/a>ed when squeezed. Of course, this raises the question why was the taxpayer funded Secret Service being used to silence people who wanted to show their disapproval for Trump\u2019s political speech by squeezing a rubber chicken?!)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To put it bluntly, the loud booing of Trump is what patriotism sounds like. <\/strong>Those people were warning Americans about who Trump is and the danger he poses to our Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were various reasons<\/a> cited by those attending the Libertarian Party convention for why they adamantly opposed Trump, such as his running up<\/a> huge federal deficits when he was in office. But what jumped out was that so many people cited Trump\u2019s threat to our democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One delegate to the Convention told<\/a> the NY Times about why she opposed Trump, saying, \u201cHe\u2019s going to make himself sound Libertarian,\u201d adding, \u201cBut he\u2019s the ultimate authoritarian.\u201d  Other attendees yelled<\/a> during Trump\u2019s speech, \u201cDonald Trump is a threat to democracy!\u201d<\/strong> While another person held up<\/a> a sign that read, \u201cNo wannabe dictators!\u201d (The person holding up the sign below was dragged<\/a> away by security.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And days before the speech, Peter Goettler<\/a>, president and chief executive of the libertarian Cato Institute, penned an op-ed<\/a> for The Washington Post about why so many libertarians opposed Trump. Goettler noted that libertarian\u2019s core believes include \u201cindividual freedom, equality under the law, pluralism, toleration, free speech, freedom of religion, government by consent of the governed, the rule of law\u201d and \u201climited constitutional government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted Trump does not adhere to those views. Goettler went on to list a litany of issues that that Trump embraced as President that are an anathema to libertarians, such as his \u201cincreasing the national debt by $8.4 trillion<\/a>.\u201d But then he turned to threat Trump poses to our freedoms, noting that Trump has vowed if he wins in 2024 \u201cto crack down<\/a> on political enemies,\u201d meaning expanding government power to silence critics and opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goettler then powerfully explained that while both Democratic and Republican presidents were not \u201cabove using extralegal means to accomplish policy objectives,\u201d Trump was more dangerous with \u201cthe supreme example being the Capitol riot of Jan. 6<\/a>, 2021, a tragic event that celebrated a total disregard for the peaceful transfer of power and constitutional order.\u201d<\/strong> He added, \u201cLibertarians know that the Constitution and the rule of law are essential elements in keeping government power constrained.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don\u2019t need to be a member of the Libertarian Party to agree that if Trump was successful in his efforts to remain in power despite losing the 2020 election, our democratic Republic as we know it would have ended.  Elections would no longer matter if Trump or any candidate could\u2014without credible evidence and after losing all judicial appeals\u2014declare that he or she could remain in office simply by alleging there was widespread fraud. That is exactly what Trump attempted to do after the 2020 election\u2014which is why he has been charged<\/a> with numerous felonies in both federal court and in Fulton County, Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In December, former GOP Rep. Liz Cheney\u2014a fierce Trump critic\u2014made a comment that has stayed with me since. Speaking of the threat posed a by a second Trump term, she\u00a0warned<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cOne of the things that we see happening today is a sort of a sleepwalking into dictatorship in the United States.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0I hope Americans across the nation read about what took place Saturday night at the Libertarian convention.\u00a0 Maybe, just maybe, the loud jeers and boos by those patriotic Americans directed against Trump will wake people up to the threat Trump poses to our Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
