July 16, 2024.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniel Lurie used to avoid two topics, but now leans into them: Levi Strauss\u2019 fortune and San Francisco\u2019s \u201cstrong mayor\u201d system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m okay with that. I run towards that,\u201d Lurie said on Tuesday evening when speaking of his family background at a&nbsp;meet-and-greet at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dolbychadwickgallery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dolby Chadwick Gallery.<\/a>&nbsp;During the first minute of his talk, he addressed his relationship to Levi Strauss, proudly noting the&nbsp;company\u2019s dedication to its workers,&nbsp;LGBTQ employees, and its history of desegregated factories in the South. \u201cWe need more businesses like that here in San Francisco.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, he also acknowledged San Francisco\u2019s strong mayoral system. \u201cYou have power as mayor,\u201d he said, promising accountability on Day One. \u201cI\u2019m not going to shy away from that. I\u2019m going to lean into that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/daniellurie.com\/events\/\">three meet-and-greets<\/a>&nbsp;this week started like the others: with Lurie\u2019s pitch to the audience. The candidate spoke of his track record running the nonprofit Tipping Point; his activist rabbi father Brian; his stepfather\u2019s family business (Levi Strauss) and its San Franciscan values; his mantra of accountability; and his priorities of public safety, mental health and the drug crisis, and cutting red tape at City Hall.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mission-local-logo-300x300.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"Mission Local logo, with blue and orange lines on the shape of the Mission District\" class=\"wp-image-639216\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay informed on local elections \u2014 sign up for&nbsp;<strong>Mission Local&#8217;s free daily newsletter<\/strong>&nbsp;today!Sign up<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the 15-minute pitch came questions from the audience, accompanied by free-flowing wine or sparkling water. But on Tuesday, there was also advice \u2014 from Matt Gonzalez, the chief attorney at the public defender\u2019s office and a 2003 mayoral candidate for the Green Party. Gonzalez also served one term as District 5 supervisor from 2001 to 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sfelections.org\/results\/20031209w\/index.html\">After losing to Newsom by a 53-47 tilt<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 which translated to 14,187 votes at the time \u2014 Gonzalez didn\u2019t seek re-election to the Board of Supervisors and was succeeded as president by Aaron Peskin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/IMG_4312-853x640.jpg?resize=780%2C585&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"A person stands and speaks to a small seated audience in a gallery room with large windows and colorful artworks on the walls.\" class=\"wp-image-641912\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Daniel Lurie listening to a question from the audience. July 16, 2024.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry, Matt Gonzalez, I\u2019m going to put you on the spot for just a second,\u201d said co-host Kem Theilig, who saved the last few minutes of the event for the former politician and one of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dolbychadwickgallery.com\/artist\/matt-gonzalez\">artists shown by the gallery.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo Matt Gonzalez, public defender, who\u2019s been in your position \u2026\u201d Theilig continued, turning to Lurie.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWell not exactly in your position. I lost the mayoral race,\u201d Gonzalez said, prompting laughter from the audience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd we are gonna win!\u201d Lurie followed up quickly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gonzalez praised Lurie\u2019s message on accountability, which he believes voters are seeking this election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The personal values of a candidate are also important, Gonzalez told the candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMaybe they don\u2019t know what your position is going to be, some transportation issue or some bond issue, or who knows what,\u201d Gonzalez said. \u201cBut they trust that you have the right values to go in there and sort it out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the third thing, Gonzalez said, is to fix city problems with long-term solutions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTotally I get it,\u201d Lurie said, nodding along as he heard the advice. \u201cThat\u2019s why I actually think my experience with Tipping Point for 20 years, understanding this long[-term] thing is perfectly suited for this moment \u2026 I know how to hold nonprofits accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For his part, Gonzalez said nothing he heard on Tuesday changed his mind.&nbsp;He still ranks former colleague Peskin as his first choice and Lurie as second. \u201cI like him very much and I like Aaron very much,\u201d Gonzalez said. \u201cThey are very different candidates.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked to elaborate, Gonzalez demurred. \u201cI don\u2019t really have time because I\u2019m going to go put the little guy to sleep,\u201d he said, pointing to his newborn baby and making his way out of the gallery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But for Chadwick, the gallery owner who met Lurie for the first time that night, things had definitely changed. \u201cI was really, really excited and impressed,\u201d she said, adding that she thinks Lurie is \u201cso smart and thinking from a practical perspective and a political perspective.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has her vote \u2014 and a donation, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/IMG_4326-853x640.jpg?resize=780%2C585&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"Three people smiling and standing close together in an art gallery, with abstract paintings visible on the walls and large windows showing a cityscape in the background.\" class=\"wp-image-641911\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Daniel Lurie taking a photo by the end of the event with Lisa Dolby Chadwick (right) and Kem Theilig (left) Photo by Xueer Lu.
