While the size of Musk&#8217;s financial contribution is particularly egregious, he is not alone in attempting to buy this election to further his own needs,&#8221; Sanders continued. &#8220;Other billionaires are also playing a significant role\u2014in both political parties. Oh, I know&#8230; here goes Bernie Sanders again about&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/citizens-united\">Citizens United<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;and the role of money in politics. I have no shortage of critics who accuse me of being boring and of hammering away at the same themes year after year after year.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re probably right. I am repetitious, but that\u2019s because the problems we care about are only getting worse,&#8221; he added. &#8220;Let&#8217;s be clear. It has never made sense to me, then or now, that a tiny clique of people should have incredible wealth and power while most people have none.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;While people like Elon Musk try to buy elections for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>, people who work for low wages, have no health insurance, can&#8217;t afford prescription drugs, and can&#8217;t find affordable housing are giving up on politics.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Citing unnamed sources,&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/elections\/elon-musk-has-said-he-is-committing-around-45-million-a-month-to-a-new-pro-trump-super-pac-dda53823\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-07-15\/pro-trump-super-pac-backed-by-elon-musk-raises-8-8-million\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;reported earlier this week that Musk has pledged to donate $45 million per month to America PAC, whose&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/15\/us\/politics\/elon-musk-trump-super-pac.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">founding donors<\/a>&nbsp;include ultra-rich tech investors who are part of Musk&#8217;s social circle. The&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/15\/us\/politics\/elon-musk-trump-super-pac.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">separately reported<\/a>&nbsp;that &#8220;one leader of America PAC told a friend that the group expected to have a major donor who would make donations in four batches, adding up to as much as $160 million over the course of the campaign.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>Journal<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Bloomberg<\/em>&nbsp;stories\u2014which Musk&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1813097084595163643\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">denied with a meme<\/a>&nbsp;that included the words &#8220;fake gnus&#8221;\u2014followed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/elon-musk-donates-trump-super-pac-1235059581\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a>&nbsp;that Musk had already given the super PAC a substantial sum of money despite his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1765397025967710542\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">March declaration<\/a>&nbsp;that he is &#8220;not donating money to either candidate for U.S. president.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Musk&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/billionaires-trump-assassination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">formally endorsed<\/a>&nbsp;Trump on X\u2014the social media platform Musk owns\u2014following an assassination attempt against the former president this past weekend in Pennsylvania. Conspiracy theories about the attempt on Trump&#8217;s life proliferated rapidly on X, with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2024\/07\/14\/blueanon-conspiracy-theories-trump-rally-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">help of Musk himself<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tesla CEO&#8217;s name&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2024\/07\/15\/musk-trump-super-pac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">did not appear<\/a>&nbsp;on America PAC&#8217;s disclosure filings for June, which could mean that he donated to the PAC earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Musk, who is worth over $250 billion, is one of more than a dozen billionaires supporting Trump and his newly chosen running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio).&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/07\/16\/trump-vp-pick-jd-vance-rnc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Axios<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/16\/us\/politics\/trump-vance-vp-decision.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Times<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;reported Tuesday that Musk personally lobbied Trump to make Vance his vice presidential pick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Musk and other U.S. billionaires&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-10-30\/u-s-billionaires-got-1-trillion-richer-in-trump-s-first-term\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">got $1 trillion richer<\/a>&nbsp;during Trump&#8217;s first four years in office, gains fueled by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/billionaires-trump-tax-cuts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">massive tax cuts<\/a>&nbsp;he signed into law in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Why are billionaires like Peter Thiel, Rupert Murdoch, Stephen Schwartzman, and the owner of this website rallying behind Trump?<br><br>Yes, the tax cuts. But there&#39;s more.<br><br>The more Trump tears down democracy, the safer the oligarchy becomes.<\/p>&mdash; Robert Reich (@RBReich) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RBReich\/status\/1813359211473932635?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 16, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sanders wrote in his email Tuesday that Musk&#8217;s influence on the 2024 election could be particularly pronounced given his ownership of X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Musk, Sanders wrote, has used the platform &#8220;to amplify the voices of conspiracy theorists who deny the results of the last election and spread the dangerous idea that Democrats want to allow mass, undocumented migration to the country to replace, electorally, the votes of white people.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The reality is that while people like Elon Musk try to buy elections for Donald Trump, people who work for low wages, have no health insurance, can&#8217;t afford prescription drugs, and can&#8217;t find affordable housing are giving up on politics,&#8221; the senator continued. &#8220;They see the rich getting richer as they use their wealth to buy influence, and wonder whether anyone in Washington even knows what is going on in their lives.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sanders argued that to end the pernicious political influence of Musk and other billionaires, it is essential to elect candidates who support overturning&nbsp;<em>Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission<\/em>, the 2010 Supreme Court decision that spawned the super PACs now playing a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/reports\/a-decade-under-citizens-united\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">massive role<\/a>&nbsp;in the nation&#8217;s elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is an issue that should concern all Americans\u2014regardless of their political point of view\u2014who wish to live under a government that represents all of the people and not just a handful of powerful special interests,&#8221; Sanders wrote. &#8220;Taking action is not just good politics, it is also good policy.
