He was the editor of the American monthly&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harper%27s_Magazine\">Harper&#8217;s Magazine<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;from 1976 until 1981, and from 1983 until 2006.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_H._Lapham#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;He was the founder of&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lapham%27s_Quarterly\">Lapham&#8217;s Quarterly<\/a><\/em>, a quarterly publication about history and literature, and wrote numerous books on politics and current affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Early_life_and_education\">Early life and education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A son of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_A._Lapham\">Lewis A. Lapham<\/a>&nbsp;and Jane Foster, Lapham was born January 8, 1935, in San Francisco.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_H._Lapham#cite_note-McFadden-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;He was raised in San Francisco<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_H._Lapham#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;and his father was president of the Grace Line and Bankers Trust.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_H._Lapham#cite_note-McFadden-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;His grandfather&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roger_Lapham\">Roger Lapham<\/a>&nbsp;had been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mayor_of_San_Francisco\">mayor of San Francisco<\/a>&nbsp;in the 1940s, and his great-grandfather,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_Henry_Lapham\">Lewis Henry Lapham<\/a>, was a founder of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Texaco\">Texaco<\/a>. Through his grandfather, Lapham was the son of the first cousin of actor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christopher_Lloyd\">Christopher Lloyd<\/a>, although Lapham was three years older. As a child, he attended the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hotchkiss_School\">Hotchkiss School<\/a>, graduating in 1952.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_H._Lapham#cite_note-McFadden-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lapham was educated at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Magdalene_College\">Magdalene College<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Cambridge\">Cambridge<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yale_University\">Yale University<\/a>, where he was a member of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._Anthony_Hall\">St. Anthony Hall<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_H._Lapham#cite_note-McFadden-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Harper's_Magazine\"><em>Harper&#8217;s Magazine<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lapham served as editor of&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harper%27s_Magazine\">Harper&#8217;s Magazine<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;from 1976 to 2006 (with a hiatus from 1981 to 1983). He was managing editor from 1971 to 1975, after having worked for the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco_Examiner\">San Francisco Examiner<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Herald_Tribune\">New York Herald Tribune<\/a><\/em>. He was largely responsible for the modern look and prominence of the magazine, having introduced many of its signature features, including the &#8220;Harper&#8217;s Index&#8221;. He announced that he would become&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Editor_emeritus\">editor emeritus<\/a>&nbsp;in 2006, continuing to write his Notebook column for the magazine as well as editing a new journal about history,&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lapham%27s_Quarterly\">Lapham&#8217;s Quarterly<\/a><\/em>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_H._Lapham#cite_note-McFadden-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_H._Lapham#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Lapham also worked with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PEN_American_Center\">PEN American Center<\/a>, sitting on the board of judges for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PEN\/Newman%27s_Own_First_Amendment_Award\">PEN\/Newman&#8217;s Own First Amendment Award<\/a>.<sup>[<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Citation_needed\">citation needed<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup>&nbsp;In 2007, he was inducted into the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Society_of_Magazine_Editors\">American Society of Magazine Editors<\/a>&#8216; Hall of Fame.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_H._Lapham#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lapham wrote a September 2004 column for&nbsp;<em>Harper&#8217;s<\/em>&nbsp;in which he included a brief account of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republican_National_Convention\">Republican National Convention<\/a>&nbsp;as if he had witnessed it, &#8220;reflecting on the content and sharing with readers a question that occurred to him as he listened&#8221;, as Jennifer Senior wrote in the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Times_Book_Review\">New York Times Book Review<\/a><\/em>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_H._Lapham#cite_note-senior-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The magazine arrived in subscribers&#8217; mailboxes before the convention took place, as Senior says &#8220;forcing Lapham to admit that the scene was a fiction&#8221;. The columnist apologized, &#8220;but pointed out political conventions are drearily scripted anyway \u2013 he basically knew what was going to be said&#8221;. Senior continues, &#8220;By this logic, though, I could have chosen not to read&nbsp;<em>Pretensions to Empire<\/em>&nbsp;before reviewing it, since I already knew Lapham&#8217;s sensibility, just as he claims to know the Republicans.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_H._Lapham#cite_note-senior-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Lapham's_Quarterly\"><em>Lapham&#8217;s Quarterly<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lapham retired from&nbsp;<em>Harper&#8217;s<\/em>&nbsp;in 2006. That year, he founded&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lapham%27s_Quarterly\">Lapham&#8217;s Quarterly<\/a><\/em>, a quarterly publication about history and literature. Each issue was devoted to one subject and featured pieces by ancient writers to contemporary celebrities.<sup><a
