{"id":38763,"date":"2025-01-14T12:28:19","date_gmt":"2025-01-14T20:28:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/?p=38763"},"modified":"2025-01-14T12:28:25","modified_gmt":"2025-01-14T20:28:25","slug":"trump-allies-launch-20-million-effort-to-convince-working-class-to-back-tax-scam-2-0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/occupysf.net\/index.php\/2025\/01\/14\/trump-allies-launch-20-million-effort-to-convince-working-class-to-back-tax-scam-2-0\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump Allies Launch $20 Million Effort to Convince Working Class to Back Tax Scam 2.0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/trump-tax-cuts-ad.png?id=55569189&amp;width=1200&amp;height=400&amp;quality=90&amp;coordinates=0%2C230%2C0%2C230\" alt=\"Trump tax cuts ad\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This screengrab shows a new ad from Americans for Prosperity, a Koch-founded group pushing for an extension of the 2017 Trump-GOP tax cuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0(Photo: Americans for Prosperity\/YouTube Screengrab)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t be fooled: What this Koch-backed group is really only after is protecting tax cuts for wealthy people like me,&#8221; said the chair of the Patriotic Millionaires.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/jake-johnson\">JAKE JOHNSON<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jan 13, 2025 (CommonDreams.org)<a href=\"https:\/\/giving.commondreams.org\/-\/XKQWGZVR\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A right-wing advocacy group founded by the billionaire Koch brothers announced Monday the launch of a $20 million&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/protectprosperity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">campaign<\/a>&nbsp;to promote an extension of the 2017 Trump-GOP tax cuts, which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/research\/federal-tax\/the-2017-trump-tax-law-was-skewed-to-the-rich-expensive-and-failed-to-deliver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disproportionately benefited the rich<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/tcja-2-years-later-corporations-not-workers-big-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">large corporations<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=v3Jm7YNoMIw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">60-second ad<\/a>&nbsp;that debuted over the weekend, Americans for Prosperity (AFP) characterizes the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act as a boon to &#8220;hardworking Americans&#8221; and small businesses\u2014and warns that allowing provisions of the law to expire at the end of this year as scheduled would be disastrous for the working class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This year, Congress is facing a countdown to a crisis that threatens family budgets nationwide,&#8221; Ross Connolly, AFP&#8217;s regional state director, said in a statement Monday. &#8220;We are proud to partner with the incoming Trump administration to protect prosperity and ensure that Congress acts.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AFP is a 501(c)(4) organization that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/americansforprosperity.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">describes itself<\/a>&nbsp;as a &#8220;grassroots&#8221; movement despite being&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php\/Americans_for_Prosperity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">launched<\/a>&nbsp;by Charles Koch and his late brother, David\u2014two of the most notorious right-wing billionaire in U.S. politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group said its new 50-state campaign represents &#8220;the largest effort by a conservative organization&#8221; to support President-elect Donald Trump&#8217;s legislative agenda as he prepares to take office next week. The campaign, according to AFP, will include &#8220;over 1,000 meetings&#8221; at congressional offices, &#8220;in-district events&#8221; with activists and lawmakers, and &#8220;roundtables with job creators.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The campaign aims to &#8220;reach millions of voters on the phone and at their doorsteps,&#8221; AFP&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/americansforprosperity.org\/commentary\/americans-for-prosperity-launches-20-million-nationwide-campaign-supporting-the-trump-tax-cuts-to-protect-maine-families-from-tax-hikes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Trump tax giveaways passed in 2017 did not help working-class Americans. In fact, the top 1% of corporations received almost all of the benefits.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AFP&#8217;s description of the impacts of the 2017 tax law flies in the face of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/research\/federal-tax\/the-2017-trump-tax-law-was-skewed-to-the-rich-expensive-and-failed-to-deliver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resounding evidence<\/a>&nbsp;showing that wealthy Americans\u2014not ordinary workers\u2014were the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/tcja-2-years-later-corporations-not-workers-big-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chief beneficiaries<\/a>&nbsp;and are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/itep.org\/trump-tax-law-tcja-permanent-state-by-state-estimates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">poised to reap most of the rewards<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tax-cuts-jobs-act-trump-treasury-agenda-f4031196e0d69d0a1630e3b06b6d3cd7\"><\/a>&nbsp;once again if Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress extend the measure&#8217;s soon-to-expire provisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Americans for Prosperity is spending $20 million on a new ad campaign that champions the 2017 Trump tax law as a win for working families,&#8221; Morris Pearl, chair of the Patriotic Millionaires, told&nbsp;<em>Common Dreams<\/em>. &#8220;But don&#8217;t be fooled: What this Koch-backed group is really only after is protecting tax cuts for wealthy people like me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m in favor of tax relief for working people, but not yet another huge and unnecessary windfall for America&#8217;s rich,&#8221; Pearl added. &#8220;If Congress wants to help working families, they should make tax rates on labor income the same as tax rates on profits made by investors.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AFP is one of a number of right-wing, corporate-tied organizations pushing for an extension of the Trump tax cuts, which Republicans are planning to fund by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/house-republicans-medicaid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">slashing<\/a>&nbsp;Medicaid, federal nutrition assistance, and other key programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The progressive watchdog group Accountable.US noted in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/accountable.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/meet-the-billionaires-and-corporate-henchmen_woeia.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent analysis<\/a>&nbsp;that one of the groups pushing for an extension of the 2017 law is Advancing American Freedom, an organization &#8220;run by corporate consultants, lobbyists, lawyers, and executives, including former Trump administration officials who were directly responsible for the TCJA.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accountable also observes that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php\/Club_for_Growth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Club for Growth<\/a>, a group funded by wealthy conservatives, &#8220;has pushed a deeper corporate tax cut plan as an &#8216;opening salvo&#8217; in the current tax debate.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The billionaire funders of the group&#8217;s action arm have benefited enormously from the TCJA, saving hundreds of millions of dollars from a single obscure tax break for pass-through entities,&#8221; the watchdog added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to AFP&#8217;s new nationwide campaign, Accountable.US executive director Tony Carrk told&nbsp;<em>Common Dreams<\/em>&nbsp;that &#8220;a glitzy ad campaign from a far-right organization won&#8217;t change the fact that the Trump administration and Republican-controlled Congress are paying for giveaways to billionaires, wealthy tax cheats, and price-gouging corporations by cutting critical services for working families, like Medicaid and SNAP.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Trump tax giveaways passed in 2017 did not help working-class Americans,&#8221; said Carrk. &#8220;In fact, the top 1% of corporations received almost all of the benefits.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
