Trump doesn\u2019t get America or comedians!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump and his FCC henchman Brendan Carr<\/a> were hoping that by threatening ABC to suspend Jimmy Kimmel, it would cause other late-night comedians to stop mocking Trump. But they were wrong\u2014which again reminds us that Trump has no idea what it means to be an American. Plus, he obviously doesn\u2019t know comedians!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To be clear, after Kimmel was suspended, Trump went all in seeking to silence any criticism of him on broadcast networks\u2014from news to comedians. That came on Thursday\u2014the day after Kimmel was suspended\u2014when Trump whined<\/a> to reporters that the networks were giving him \u201conly bad publicity, press.\u201d<\/strong> He then warned that if these networks continue to criticize or mock him as they have been doing, he will take them off the air saying, \u201cI would think maybe their license should be taken away.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, how did the late-night comedians respond to Trump\u2019s threats? They collectively punched<\/a> Trump in the face\u2014over and over again! One of the best was Jon Stewart<\/strong> who made a surprise appearance to host The Daily Show on a Thursday\u2014as opposed to his typical Monday slot\u2013because he wanted to address this issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The episode kicked off with a new \u201cDaily Show\u201d open<\/a> that was a salute to Trump with the voiceover declaring, \u201cFrom Comedy Central, it\u2019s the all-new, government-approved Daily Show, with your patriotically-obedient host Jon Stewart!\u201d<\/strong> That is when Stewart began with the line, \u201cWe have another fun, hilarious, administration-compliant show.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stewart stuck with this theme the entire monologue as he (sarcastically) heaped praise on Trump as \u201cour dear father\u201d whose \u201ckindness is only outdone by your manliness.\u201d Obviously, this was all intended to make the point for the audience that the Trump regime demands everyone praise him. (You can watch the entire open below which already has more than 9 million views on YouTube\u2014which is double the ratings of any Fox News show.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On CBS, Stewart\u2019s good friend Stephen Colbert<\/strong> started out his late night show on a serious note, saying<\/a> \u201cWe are all Jimmy Kimmel,\u201d adding his removal was a \u201cblatant assault on freedom of speech.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colbert then took a moment to slam Trump\u2019s FCC flunky Brendan Carr who was the one who personally threatened ABC, calling him an \u201cindividually wrapped hard-boiled egg that they sell at the airport.\u201d And the late-night host later reprised his faux right wing, alter ego from \u201cThe Colbert Report\u201d where he sarcastically supported the silencing of Kimmel. For example, regarding the First Amendment, Colbert said, \u201cYou can have your rights just as long as you don\u2019t use them\u201d<\/em> with the text on screen reading \u201cLike a gym membership.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over on NBC\u2019s The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon<\/strong> had a different approach that made the same vitally important point to big laughs. Fallon shared that a lot of people are worried about censorship, but he was determined to cover Trump\u2019s trip to Britain like he normally would. At that point, Fallon began to tell jokes about Trump\u2014but then a voice was dubbed over his punch lines that praised Trump. For example, Fallon stated: \u201cWell, guys, President Trump just wrapped up a three-day trip to the U.K. and he \u2014\u201d The dubbed voice then continued over what Jimmy was actually saying: \u201cLooked incredibly handsome.\u201d (See clip below)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seth Meyers<\/strong> followed Fallon on his own NBC late night show, where he too made the point Trump is a threat to free speech. Meyers told the audience, \u201cI just want to say, before we get started here, that I\u2019ve always admired and respected Mr. Trump. I\u2019ve always believed he was \u2014 [responding to audience laughter]<\/em> no, no, no \u2014 a visionary, an innovator, a great president, an even better golfer.\u201d Meyers then quipped, \u201cAnd if you\u2019ve ever seen me say anything negative about him, that\u2019s just A.I.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even former legendary late night host David Letterman<\/a> slammed Trump\u2019s efforts to silence Kimmel stating, \u201cYou can\u2019t go around firing somebody because you\u2019re fearful or trying to suck up to an authoritarian, criminal administration in the Oval Office.\u201d He then added this warning, \u201cIn the world of somebody who is an authoritarian, maybe a dictatorship, sooner or later, everyone is going to be touched.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But not everyone in late night was defending free speech. Fox News pro-fascist jester Greg Gutfeld<\/strong> openly defended<\/a> the silencing of Kimmel, saying that Kirk\u2019s \u201cdeath has reset this country, and now people are actually paying attention to their words because we saw what those words did to a fine young man.\u201d That is why in Gutfeld\u2019s view Kimmel deserved to be silenced for telling a joke the Trump regime didn\u2019t approve of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Gutfeld dared<\/a> Kimmel \u201cto hold an outdoor rally and invite everyone. That\u2019s what Charlie would do.\u201d But he added, \u201cMaybe it\u2019s just better to stay in studio with metal detectors and security.\u201d Sounds like Gutfeld wanted Kimmel to do a rally with no security to see if someone would kill him. This is what passes as comedy for fascists.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back to the actual comedians, in between the comedy bits, the hosts also shared their support for Kimmel in serious moments. For example, Colbert warned, \u201cWith an autocrat, you cannot give an inch. And if ABC thinks that this is going to satisfy the regime, they are woefully na\u00efve.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This very visible show of support for Kimmel and defiance of Trump is actually important in the fight against tyranny. Liz Yates<\/a> \u2013who is an expert on threats to democracy\u2013explained<\/a> to me that these well-known late night hosts jokes and comments about Trump\u2019s attack on free speech are actually \u201ccritical\u201d in the fight against autocracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yates noted that this united front is showing the nation that there is broad based opposition to what Trump did to Kimmel. Yates added, \u201cWe know that the best way to combat authoritarianism is to build a really broad coalition.\u201d In addition, these comedians with their large platforms help raise awareness for those who may not follow politics closely but are watching the show for the comedy. Now, they, too, will get the message about how Trump poses a threat to freedom of speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump hoped to intimidate the late-night comedians into stop mocking him. Instead, they mocked him even more. Plus, they reached millions\u2014including those who don\u2019t follow politics closely\u2013with the message that Trump is a threat to all of our freedoms. In other words, the late-night hosts used punch lines to repeatedly punch Trump in his fascist face<\/strong>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
