Rally Against Trump's Crypto Dealings\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-uae-crypto-deal\">\u2018Incredible Corruption\u2019: Blockbuster Report on Trump Crypto Grift Leaves Observers Stunned<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/rubio-thought-policing-bill\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/us-politics-vance.jpg?id=60543901&amp;width=600&amp;height=600&amp;quality=50&amp;coordinates=164%2C0%2C165%2C0\" alt=\"US-POLITICS-VANCE\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/rubio-thought-policing-bill\">New \u2018Thought Policing\u2019 Bill May Let Rubio Strip Passports from US Citizens Over Political Speech<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGovernments plan to produce 120% the volume of fossil fuels in 2030 than would be consistent with limiting global warming to 1.5\u00b0C, and 77% more than would be consistent with 2\u00b0C,\u201d the report found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their last analysis in 2023, the groups found a 110% and 69% gap over the 1.5\u00b0C and 2\u00b0C limits, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The groups analyzed the 20 largest producers of fossil fuels around the world\u2014including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, and Canada\u2014that are responsible for 80% of fossil fuel extraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only three of the countries\u2014Norway, the UK, and Australia\u2014currently have plans to reduce oil and gas production by 2030 compared with 2023 levels. Eleven of them\u2014including the US, Germany, and Saudi Arabia\u2014are planning for higher production of at least one type of fossil fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTrump is fulfilling his dream of petrostate authoritarianism, backed by oil and gas billionaires. Unless we fight to stop it, the whole world is going to pay the price.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Derik Broekhoff, the lead author of the report and a senior scientist at SEI,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/sep\/22\/fossil-fuels-coal-gas-oil-extraction-climate-goals-beyond-reach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;in a statement that \u201cwhile many countries have committed to a clean energy transition, many others appear to be stuck using a fossil-fuel-dependent playbook, planning even more production than they were two years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The authors stressed that fossil fuel-producing countries are persisting in oil, gas, and coal extraction even as industries know \u201cfossil fuels are on their last legs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cClean energy attracted $2 trillion in investment last year\u2014$800 billion more than fossil fuels, and a 70% increase since the Paris agreement,\u201d reads the report. \u201cIn 2024, 92% of new global power capacity came from renewables, which undercut fossil fuels on price, efficiency, and emissions\u2014even with subsidies artificially keeping fossil fuel prices down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neil Grant, a senior expert at Climate Analytics, noted that less demand for fossil fuels could make them cheaper, which could prolong the transition to renewable energy that the vast majority of the world population&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/international-climate-poll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">supports<\/a>, according to one poll last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are in the foothills of an energy transition that is going to reshape fossil fuel demand,\u201d Grant&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/sep\/22\/fossil-fuels-coal-gas-oil-extraction-climate-goals-beyond-reach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;<em>The Guardian<\/em><em>.<\/em>&nbsp;\u201cBut many governments are thinking in terms of a world where the energy transition happens very incrementally. There\u2019s a lot of danger, [including that] the voice of the fossil fuel lobby only gets louder and holds us back from this change to a cleaner, better, greener economy. That would lead to climate chaos or significant negative economic impacts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGovernments are blundering backwards towards our fossil past,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CA_Latest\/status\/1970146505022677201\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Grant in a statement, but \u201crapid reductions are possible, feasible, and they would make our lives better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily Ghosh, a program director at SEI, warned that to limit planetary heating to 1.5\u00b0C, \u201cfossil fuel production should have peaked and started to fall.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery year of delay significantly increases the pressure,\u201d she told&nbsp;<em>The Guardian<\/em>, adding that a \u201ccourse correction\u201d is urgently needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jean Su, director of the Energy Justice program at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/center-for-biological-diversity\">Center for Biological Diversity<\/a>, pointed to US President Donald Trump\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/celebratory-and-uplifting-sun-day-events-champion-promise-of-wind-and-solar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">climate policy<\/a>, including his move to end tax credits for solar panels and electric vehicles and to cancel the construction of an offshore wind farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTrump is fulfilling his dream of petrostate authoritarianism, backed by oil and gas billionaires. Unless we fight to stop it, the whole world is going to pay the price,\u201d said Su.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis report shows just how reckless the U.S. and other countries are in doubling down on fossil fuels,\u201d she added. \u201cIt\u2019s astonishing that in the two years since countries agreed in Dubai to transition off fossil fuels, the U.S. is leading the abandonment of affordable renewables for deadly oil and gas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelly Trout, research director at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/oil-change-international\">Oil Change International<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/oilchange.org\/news\/oil-change-international-response-to-the-2025-production-gap-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emphasized<\/a>&nbsp;that \u201cit is not yet too late to act.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith the US driving the majority of global projected oil and gas expansion over the next decade, governments must resist bowing to the Trump administration\u2019s pro-fossil fuel agenda, and instead seize the chance to rapidly shift course,\u201d said Trout. \u201cCountries can still deliver the just energy transition away from fossil fuels they promised us two years ago, with other rich Global North producers taking the lead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report was released as Colombia&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fossilfueltreaty.org\/phase-out-conference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;at the UN General Assembly its intention to host the First International Conference for the Phaseout of Fossil Fuels, aligning with the International Court of Justice\u2019s historic&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/icj-climate-ruling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advisory opinion<\/a>&nbsp;this year recognizing countries\u2019 legal obligation to protect the climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As advocates called for the Production Gap Report to be \u201cboth a warning and a guide,\u201d Tzeporah Berman of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative said Colombia had signaled \u201ca bold and necessary step towards climate leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis conference offers a vital opportunity to translate growing support into concrete action,\u201d said Berman, \u201caccelerating our shift towards a more sustainable and just energy future for all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
