Photo by Mariana Garcia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In weeks of attending&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/09\/sf-ice-immigration-crackdown-illustrated\/\">asylum hearings<\/a>&nbsp;at San Francisco\u2019s immigration court,&nbsp;<em>Mission Local&nbsp;<\/em>reporters have seen dozens of people arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement without ever getting a lawyer\u2019s help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there are those who may encounter ICE agents on the street, and don\u2019t know their rights. Or family members whose relatives are arrested and sent to detention centers, but who don\u2019t know how to look them up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We put together this resource guide for asylum seekers, people with Temporary Protected Status, and anyone in need of immigration counsel to answer the questions: How can you prepare if you or a loved one are detained by ICE? And what comes after?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mission-local-logo-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mission Local logo, with blue and orange lines on the shape of the Mission District\" class=\"wp-image-639216\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Want the latest on the Mission and San Francisco? Sign up for our&nbsp;<strong>free daily newsletter<\/strong>&nbsp;below.Sign up<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We consulted with attorneys to create this, but this is not legal advice and you should always speak to a lawyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-encounter-ice\"><strong>If you encounter ICE<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Know your rights<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Catherine Seitz, legal director at the Immigration Institute of the Bay Area, said that, first and foremost, \u201cPeople should make sure that they are informed about their basic rights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can access free, online know your rights&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wehaverights.us\/spanish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">presentations<\/a>&nbsp;along with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/know-your-rights\/derechos-de-los-inmigrantes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">written materials<\/a>&nbsp;from the American Civil Liberties Union to help navigate different scenarios. In particular, says Seitz, you have a right to keep your door closed if ICE shows up at your home or work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To enter, ICE needs a judicial warrant, which must be signed by a judge and issued by a court<\/strong>,&nbsp;<em>not<\/em>&nbsp;an administrative warrant which is signed by an ICE agent. Courtesy of ACLU Norther California.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In any encounter with ICE, says Jazmin Preciado, an attorney with Centro Legal de la Raza in Oakland,&nbsp;<strong>you have the right to remain silent<\/strong>. Any information you share with ICE agents can be used against you in court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are arrested, Preciado advises talking as little as possible, and refusing to sign any documents until you have legal representation. \u201cZip it and wait until you\u2019re in front of a lawyer. It doesn\u2019t matter how much they probe.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Make a plan<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The Immigrant Legal Resource Center has developed a template for creating an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilrc.org\/resources\/step-step-family-preparedness-plan#espa%C3%B1ol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emergency preparedness plan<\/a>. Talk to trusted loved ones to develop a plan of action for what you will do in the case that you or someone you know is detained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For parents with children, Seitz says this means making sure you\u2019ve \u201ctalked with someone about who they want to take care of the kids.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure that trusted contacts have access to critical items like A-Numbers, car keys, and house keys before you attend asylum hearings and other ICE check-ins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asylum seekers have left their cars parked on the street while attending immigration court and then been detained with no way for a friend or relative to move the car. Others have gone in without giving their house keys to anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do have to go to court, Faith in Action provides&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithinactionba.org\/accompaniment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">court watchers<\/a>&nbsp;in San Francisco who will accompany you. You can reach their community response hotline at 206-666-4472.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are not represented by an attorney, there are sometimes volunteers at immigration court known as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfbar.org\/jdc\/immigrant-legal-defense\/attorney-of-the-day-resources-for-our-immigrant-community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Attorneys of the Day<\/a>, who are certified by the Bar Association San Francisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Call for assistance<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you witness a deportation, Seitz says that \u201cthe best first step is to call a rapid response hotline and let them know that the person has been detained so that a rapid response attorney can go down to the detention center and try to meet with the detained person as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An attorney might ask you for the detained person\u2019s A-number, date of birth or country of origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The San Francisco&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/immigrants.sf.gov\/es\/node\/22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rapid response hotline<\/a>&nbsp;can be reached at 415-200-1548. This is a 24\/7 hotline that can be used to report ICE sightings at home, at work or in public spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are detained, Seitz recommends calling a person who can communicate with rapid response on your behalf, instead of calling the hotline directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMake sure you have at least one phone number memorized, so that you can call somebody and let them know that you\u2019ve been detained.\u201d Seitz adds, \u201chave that person call the rapid response because [a] detained person is going to have very limited access to the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More resources for<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>free and low-cost&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/immigrants.sf.gov\/es\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">legal aid<\/a>&nbsp;in San Francisco are available on this list maintained by the Office of Civic Engagement &amp; Immigrant Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-know-someone-who-has-been-detained\"><strong>If you know someone who has been detained<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you know someone who has been detained and is being held by ICE, this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/locator.ice.gov\/odls\/#\/search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Online Detainee Locator System<\/a>&nbsp;helps you to keep track of a loved one\u2019s whereabouts. If you have their nine-digit A-Number and country of birth, you can find out whether they are in ICE custody and what detention center they are being held at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do not know the person\u2019s A-Number, you can also search with their first and last name, country of birth and birthday. According to the&nbsp; website, family members and attorneys \u201cmay be able to obtain additional information about this individual\u2019s case\u201d by calling the Enforcement and Removal Operations office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two closest such offices to San Francisco are Mesa Verde in Bakersfield (661-328-4500) and the Golden State Annex (661-792-2731).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-help-us-cover-ice-in-san-francisco\">Help us cover ICE in San Francisco<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/ICE-0820-8-853x640.jpg\" alt=\"A police officer wearing protective gear confronts a masked individual holding a bicycle during a street incident.
