Now they\u2019re willing to shut down the government for even higher costs for us, our neighbors, and our entire community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Terrifying IA01\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lQSIY4foWt4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Unrig Our Economy campaign director Leor Tal said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unrigoureconomy.com\/news\/unrig-our-economy-launches-new-ads-calling-out-congressional-republicans-for-threatening-to-raise-health-care-costs-shut-down-the-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>&nbsp;introducing the new ads that \u201cRepublicans in Congress are once again putting wealthy donors and billionaires ahead of hardworking families.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy threatening to shut down the government unless they can allow healthcare tax credits to expire, they are putting millions of Americans at risk of paying even higher costs or losing healthcare entirely,\u201d Tal added. \u201cThese ads urge Republicans in Congress to reverse course to actually protect Americans\u2019 healthcare and avoid a government shutdown.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Wednesday\u2019s midnight deadline to avert a shutdown fast approaches, healthcare and consumer advocates are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/government-shutdown-healthcare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warning<\/a>&nbsp;that millions of Americans would either lose insurance coverage or see their premiums spike. Some critics say that\u2019s exactly what GOP lawmakers want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, the White House Office of Management and Budget also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/mass-firings\">directed<\/a>&nbsp;federal agencies to prepare to fire large numbers of employees if the government shuts down, a move critics claim OMB Director Russell Vought is using as leverage against Senate Democrats who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/09\/19\/us\/politics\/house-spending-extension.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blocked<\/a>&nbsp;advancement of a short-term spending measure passed in the House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Democrats, meanwhile, are attempting to negotiate a bipartisan bill containing an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies, which are set to expire at the end of the year.&nbsp;<strong><\/strong>The expiration is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/insurance-premiums-hike-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expected<\/a>&nbsp;to raise healthcare premiums by an average of 75% for millions of Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>US President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0is set to meet Monday afternoon with the four top congressional leaders at the White House to discuss the looming shutdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
