Democratic Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker is drawing applause in the wake of his call to use the 25th Amendment to remove US President Donald Trump<\/a> from office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Priztker on Tuesday blasted Trump for his speech in front of US military leaders in Quantico, Virginia, in which he said<\/a> that he\u2019d like to see cities such as Chicago used as \u201ctraining grounds for our military,\u201d while at the same time threatening to use US troops to wage a war against \u201cthe enemy within.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt appears that Donald Trump not only has dementia set in, but he\u2019s copying tactics of [Russian President] Vladimir Putin,\u201d Pritzker remarked. \u201cSending troops into cities, thinking that that\u2019s some sort of proving ground for war, or that indeed there\u2019s some sort of internal war going on in the United States is just, frankly, inane and I\u2019m concerned for his health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Illinois governor then added, \u201cThere is something genuinely wrong with this man, and the 25th Amendment ought to be invoked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pritzker wasn\u2019t the only Trump critic to call for invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office, as Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) posted<\/a> an all-caps message on social media that simply read, \u201c25TH AMENDMENT!\u201d in the wake of Trump\u2019s Quantico speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An anonymous US defense official mentioned the possibility of invoking the 25th Amendment in an interview<\/a> with The Intercept<\/em> in which he expressed alarm at Trump\u2019s stated desire to use the military against his domestic military opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is truly disturbing,\u201d the defense official said. \u201cHe is clearly unwell even for Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former US Labor Secretary Robert Reich wrote<\/a> a Tuesday editorial, published before the president delivered his address at Quantico, in which he pointed to evidence of Trump\u2019s growing mental instability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among other things, Reich pointed to Trump\u2019s now-deleted social media post promoting an artificial intelligence-generated video about fictitious magical beds capable of healing any illness, as well as his decision to send the US military into Portland<\/a>, Oregon after being apparently confused by old footage shown on Fox News<\/em> into falsely believing that the city was being burned to the ground by rioters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTrump is showing growing signs of dementia,\u201d Reich wrote. \u201cHe\u2019s increasingly unhinged. He\u2019s 79 years old with a family history of dementia<\/a>. He could well be going nuts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 25th Amendment states<\/a> that the vice president, with the support of the majority of the president\u2019s Cabinet, can remove the sitting president from office by asserting he is \u201cunable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congressional Democrats publicly\u00a0urged<\/a>\u00a0former Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump after he incited a deadly riot at the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021. Pence refused, and the House of Representatives proceeded to impeach Trump on charges of inciting an insurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
