We need to make the economic case for savings for American families &amp; businesses. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bl9Y268rva\">pic.twitter.com\/bl9Y268rva<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Ro Khanna (@RoKhanna) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RoKhanna\/status\/1981350387534659925?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 23, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2020 analysis from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/economic-policy-institute\">Economic Policy Institute<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/medicare-for-all-would-help-the-labor-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found<\/a>&nbsp;that Medicare for All would benefit companies and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/workers\">workers<\/a>&nbsp;by supporting self-employment and small business development, boosting wages, increasing job quality, and lessening the stress and economic shock of losing or changing employment. That same year, the Congressional&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/budget\">Budget<\/a>&nbsp;Office (CBO)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2020\/12\/11\/seems-good-policy-cbo-shows-medicare-all-could-cover-everyone-650-billion-less-year\">estimated<\/a>&nbsp;that shifting to Medicare for All could save $650 billion annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khanna on Thursday pushed back against claims that under Medicare for All, Americans wouldn\u2019t be able to get the healthcare they need, saying: \u201cI don\u2019t think Medicare is rationing more than the private industry. [If] you are on private insurance, that\u2019s where you get rationed. You have to get your pre-authorization. You have things denied. Medicare, actually, doesn\u2019t do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Medicare can deny coverage, KFF&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/affordable-care-act\/consumer-survey-highlights-problems-with-denied-health-insurance-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found<\/a>&nbsp;in 2023 that people with employer-sponsored health insurance were twice as likely as those on Medicare for Medicaid\u2014which covers people with low incomes and disabilities\u2014to have a claim denied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTraditional Medicare, also known as Original Medicare, has historically required little in the way of pre-authorization for beneficiaries seeking services; pre-authorization was typically the domain of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/medicare-advantage\">Medicare Advantage<\/a>,\u201d or plans administered by private insurance companies,&nbsp;<em>Kiplinger<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplinger.com\/retirement\/medicare\/prior-authorization-coming-to-traditional-medicare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;this summer. \u201cBut that\u2019s about to change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under President Donald Trump\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/dr-mehmet-oz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">profoundly unqualified<\/a>\u201d pick to lead the Centers for Medicare and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/medicaid\">Medicaid<\/a>&nbsp;Services, Dr. Mehmet Oz, CMS will require prior authorization for 17 services it claims \u201care vulnerable to fraud, waste, and abuse\u201d in six states next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning in January,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/arizona\">Arizona<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/new-jersey\">New Jersey<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/ohio\">Ohio<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/oklahoma\">Oklahoma<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/texas\">Texas<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/washington\">Washington<\/a>&nbsp;will serve as testing grounds \u201cto provide an improved and expedited prior authorization process relative to Original Medicare\u2019s existing processes, helping patients and providers avoid unnecessary or inappropriate care and safeguarding federal taxpayer dollars,\u201d CMS&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/cms-launches-new-model-target-wasteful-inappropriate-services-original-medicare\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>&nbsp;in a June statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Julie Alderman Boudreau, who has worked as a researcher at various organizations,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/juliealdermanb\/status\/1939706646197838137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warned<\/a>&nbsp;at the time that \u201cthis is a Medicare cut by another name. This will cause seniors to delay care or forgo it altogether.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CMS announcement came just days before Trump signed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/republicans\">Republicans<\/a>\u2019 One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which contained cuts to Medicaid and did not extend expiring&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/affordable-care-act\">Affordable Care Act<\/a>&nbsp;premium tax credits. The current government shutdown, which began on October 1, stems from Democrats\u2019 fight to undo the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/gop\">GOP<\/a>&nbsp;attacks on Medicaid and ACA subsidies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CBO estimates that 10 million Americans could be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/big-beautiful-bill-debt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">booted<\/a>&nbsp;off Medicaid because of cuts. Additionally,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/aca-marketplace-previews-show-staggering-premium-spikes-due-to-gop-subsidy-cuts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than<\/a>&nbsp;20 million Americans who buy insurance via ACA marketplaces are expected to see their premiums spike next year, and some of them may not be able to afford any plans. Multiple polls&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/healthcare-poll-ap-norc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released<\/a>&nbsp;this week&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/health-insurance-premiums-rise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">show<\/a>&nbsp;that US voters are concerned about premium hikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of those surveys, released Monday by Data for Progress and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/groundwork-collaborative\">Groundwork Collaborative<\/a>, also shows that voters want Democrats in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/congress\">Congress<\/a>&nbsp;to keep fighting for a fix to the looming healthcare crisis, even if it means the shutdown continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khanna\u2014one of several Democrats considered a potential 2028 presidential candidate\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepRoKhanna\/status\/1980315409749537268\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/social-media\">social media<\/a>&nbsp;earlier this week that KFF polling&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/affordable-care-act\/kff-health-tracking-poll-public-weighs-political-consequences-of-health-policy-legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shows<\/a>&nbsp;that \u201c78% of Americans favor extending ACA credits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRepublicans are once again trying to reward the ultrawealthy at the expense of regular folks,\u201d he added. \u201cIt\u2019s time to pass Medicare for All and solidify Americans\u2019 right to affordable healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
