Just over nine months after President Donald Trump<\/a> returned to office and pardoned<\/a> his supporters who stormed the US Capitol, one of the Republican\u2019s top aides suggested that federal law enforcement may arrest Democrats standing up to the White House\u2019s anti-migrant agenda, including Illinois<\/a> Gov. JB Pritzker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked about the administration\u2019s willingness and federal authority to arrest the Illinois leader on Fox News<\/em> Friday, Stephen Miller<\/a>, Trump\u2019s deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser, responded: \u201cWell, the answer I\u2019m about to give doesn\u2019t only apply to Gov. Pritzker, it applies to any state official, any local official, anybody who\u2019s operating in an official capacity who conspires or engages in activity that unlawfully impedes federal law enforcement conducting their duties.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo if you engage in a criminal conspiracy to obstruct the enforcement of federal immigration<\/a> laws or to unlawfully order your own police<\/a> officers or your own officials to try to interfere with ICE<\/a> officers, or even to arrest ICE officers, you\u2019re engaged in criminal activity,\u201d he said, referring to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a>. \u201cDifferent types of crimes would apply. There is obstruction of justice. There is harboring illegal aliens. There is impeding the enforcement of our immigration laws.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd then, as you get up the scale of behavior, you obviously get into seditious conspiracy charges, depending on the conduct, and many other offenses. So again, it depends on the action. It depends on the conduct. It depends on what is taking place,\u201d Miller continued. He went on to tell ICE officers that \u201cyou have federal immunity in the conduct of your duties.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both Miller\u2019s threat toward Pritzker and other officials, and his immunity claim, were met with swift backlash, including from Zeteo<\/em>\u2018s Mehdi Hasan, who highlighted<\/a> Trump\u2019s pardons for the January 6<\/a>, 2021 insurrectionists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump himself has called<\/a> for jailing Pritzker and Democratic Chicago<\/a> Mayor Brandon Johnson \u201cfor failing to protect\u201d ICE officers. Priztker, a billionaire and potential 2028 presidential candidate, has suggested<\/a> Trump should be removed from office via the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miles Taylor, who served<\/a> as Department of Homeland Security chief of staff during the first Trump administration<\/a> and authored an infamous, anonymous 2018 New York<\/a> Times<\/em> editorial<\/a>, said<\/a> Friday, \u201cFeels like we\u2019re going down the rabbit hole pretty fast here, folks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

California<\/a> state Sen. Scott Weiner (D-11), one of the Democrats running<\/a> for former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi\u2019s seat in the next cycle, said<\/a>: \u201cThey\u2019re now explicitly taking the position that state and local elected officials are committing crimes when they attempt to protect their communities from the ICE secret police.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weiner\u2018s state Senate district includes San Francisco<\/a>, one of the cities targeted by Trump with immigration agents<\/a>, and a potential National Guard deployment<\/a>. The president said he backed off the threat to send troops to the city, for now, after calls from billionaire friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Trump\u2019s administration is still fighting<\/a> in federal court to deploy<\/a> the National Guard in the Chicagoland area, where ICE\u2019s Operation Midway Blitz<\/a> is underway. The people of Illinois have responded<\/a> with persistent protests<\/a>, including at an ICE facility in suburban Broadview, where agents have met<\/a> demonstrations with violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, ICE officers do not have immunity to assault and arrest unarmed Americans without a warrant,\u201d former Obama administration<\/a> official and Pod Save America<\/em> co-host Jon Favreau stressed<\/a> on social media<\/a> Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tufts University international politics professor Daniel Drezner similarly said<\/a>, \u201cThis seems very disturbing and also wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari (D-Ariz.) concluded<\/a>: \u201cStephen Miller is the most evil, fascist, wannabe authoritarian in the Trump regime. And that\u2019s saying something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miller\u2019s comments came just two days after Pritzker\u00a0appeared<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0Fox News<\/em>\u00a0and discussed Trump\u2019s attacks on him, immigration agents\u2019 actions in Illinois, and the risk that Trump may try to use US troops to\u00a0steal<\/a>\u00a0future\u00a0elections<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
