Lurie&#8217;s office refuses to disclose details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A week ago today, San Francisco and the greater Bay Area were bracing for an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2025\/10\/22\/trumps-federal-invasion-of-san-francisco-may-begin-on-thursday\/\">area-wide invasion of National Guard and\/or ICE troops<\/a>, and an East Bay deployment was already&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2025\/10\/23\/protesters-gather-on-coast-guard-island-in-alameda-ahead-of-immigration-operation-at-least-two-already-injured\/\">off to a contentious&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/start.so\/\">start<\/a>. So it seemed a pretty major coup when SF Mayor Daniel Lurie announced the next day that he had a phone call with President Trump in which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2025\/10\/23\/trump-tells-mayor-daniel-lurie-that-federal-deployment-in-sf-is-called-off\/\">Trump called off the deployment<\/a>, and that standing-down extended&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2025\/10\/24\/oakland-mayor-barbara-lee-gets-confirmation-that-no-immigration-operations-are-happening\/\">to the entire Bay Area<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Public Safety Update, October 23, 2025\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q2-zY3hggQw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see Lurie (very mildly) spiking the football in the video above. \u201cLate last night, I received a phone call from the President of the United States,\u201d Lurie said in the address. \u201cThe President told me clearly that he was calling off any plans for a federal surge in San Francisco.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For his part,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/115424560133045127\">Trump said on Truth Social<\/a>&nbsp;that \u201cI spoke to Mayor Lurie last night and he asked, very nicely, that I give him a chance to see if he can turn it around.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those two versions of the conversation do not square up entirely. So the SF Public Press put in a Sunshine Ordinance request for records of that phone call, a fairly standard journalistic practice that would have produced information like who else might have been on the call. But as the Public Press reports, Lurie\u2019s office is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfpublicpress.org\/mayors-office-shields-details-of-call-that-supposedly-defused-conflict-with-trump\/\">refusing to release any informational details about the call<\/a>. &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, they did release some information, though it did not really contain anything that was not already known. As the Public Press reports, \u201cthe mayor\u2019s office provided a one-page summary of Lurie\u2019s activities for Wednesday, which included the entry: \u20187:30 pm \u2013 7:55 pm Phone Call with Donald Trump, President of the United States re: calling off potential federal deployment in San Francisco. Attendee: Donald Trump, President of the United States.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lurie\u2019s office said they were withholding any further information \u201con the basis of attorney-client privilege.\u201d The Public Press adds that \u201cThe [mayor\u2019s] office said the request was now considered closed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attorney-client privilege is an unusual explanation, considering that neither Trump nor Daniel Lurie is an attorney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump\u2019s Truth Social post also name-checked &#8220;Jensen Huang, Marc Benioff, and others\u201d in talking him out of deploying troops here. (Jensen Huang is the Nvidia CEO who owns a mansion on SF\u2019s \u201cBillionaire Row\u201d).&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/24\/us\/daniel-lurie-trump-san-francisco.html\">Further reporting from the New York Times<\/a>&nbsp;says that Lurie \u201cpower mapped\u201d other connections he has in Trump\u2019s orbit, and had OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and big-time tech investor Ron Conway lobby Trump, or people close enough to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There has been some degree of fair criticism that this all took place behind closed doors and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/10\/san-francisco-national-guard-troops-immigration-daniel-lurie-marc-benioff\/\">orchestrated among billionaire oligarchs<\/a>. But folks, we elected a mayor whose inheritance and eventualy billionaire status (his mother is worth an estimated $1 billion, he is not yet) is his primary political resume, so don\u2019t be surprised that an oligarchy is running the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Lurie\u2019s office is probably playing it close to the vest on this one because he doesn\u2019t want to piss off Trump.
