It is how we stop the next one.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/jon-queally\">Jon Queally<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nov 05, 2025 (CommonDreams.org)<a href=\"javascript:;\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/zohran-mamdani\">Zohran Mamdani<\/a>&nbsp;was elected the next mayor of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/new-york\">New York<\/a>&nbsp;City on Tuesday in a victory he and his supporters say reflects the hope of a city\u2014and a nation\u2014ready for a new kind of politics that puts the needs of working people at the center after decades of failed leadership that put corporate interests and the desires of the wealthiest first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Withstanding a barrage of negative ads and fearmongering by the city\u2019s elite, the democratic socialist candidate secured 50.4 percent of the vote in a three-way race that saw disgraced former New York Governor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/andrew-cuomo\">Andrew Cuomo<\/a>, who ran as an Independent after losing the Democratic primary to Mandani, nab 41.6 percent, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa just over 7 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RECOMMENDED&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/zohran-mamdani-rally\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/zohran-mamdani-rally.jpg?id=61749694&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=80&amp;coordinates=170%2C0%2C171%2C0\" alt=\"Zohran Mamdani rally\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/zohran-mamdani-rally\">Raucous Mamdani Rally Reveals Political Battle Stretches Beyond New York City<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/mamdani-exit-polls\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/nyc-mayoral-candidate-zohran-mamdani-holds-election-night-event.jpg?id=62064255&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=80&amp;coordinates=1000%2C0%2C1000%2C0\" alt=\"NYC Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani Holds Election Night Event\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/mamdani-exit-polls\">42-Point Blowout With Young Men Helped Fuel Mamdani\u2019s Victory<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHope is alive,\u201d declared Mamdani in his victory speech from the Paramount Theater in Brooklyn after most major networks called the victory his shortly after 9:30 pm local time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile we cast our ballots alone, we chose hope together,\u201d said Mamdani. \u201cHope over tyranny. Hope over big money and small ideas. Hope over despair. We won because New Yorkers allowed themselves to hope that the impossible could be made possible. And we won because we insisted that no longer would politics be something that is done to us. Now, it is something that we do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis will be an age where New Yorkers expect from their leaders a bold vision of what we will achieve, rather than a list of excuses for what we are too timid to attempt.\u201d \u2014Zohran Mamdani<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mamdani, a member of the New York State Assembly who ran a campaign focused on making life more affordable for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/workers\">workers<\/a>&nbsp;who make the nation\u2019s largest city run and thrive, said that while the campaign\u2019s unifying and inspiring spirit meant his supporters could express a collective sigh of relief after the election day win, the hard work will now be making that shared vision for the city become a reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis will be an age where New Yorkers expect from their leaders a bold vision of what we will achieve, rather than a list of excuses for what we are too timid to attempt,\u201d he said. \u201cCentral to that vision will be the most ambitious agenda to tackle the cost-of-living crisis that this city has seen since the days of Fiorello La Guardia: an agenda that will freeze the rents for more than two million rent-stabilized tenants, make buses fast and free, and deliver universal child care across our city.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYears from now, may our only regret be that this day took so long to come,\u201d he added. \u201cThis new age will be one of relentless improvement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/progressives\">progressives<\/a>&nbsp;and Democrats nationwide took the victory in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/new-york-city\">New York City<\/a>&nbsp;as a sign of what a populist campaign focused on the needs of working people can accomplish, Mamdani also spoke to the underlying theme of Tuesday\u2019s elections across the country, where Democrats claimed major wins in various competitive races and ballot initiatives\u2014outcomes seen as a resounding rebuke to President Donald Trump\u2019s scorched-earth second term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we embrace this brave new course rather than fleeing from it,\u201d said Mamdani, \u201cWe can respond to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/oligarchy\">oligarchy<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/authoritarianism\">authoritarianism<\/a>\u00a0with the strength it fears, not the appeasement it craves. It is how we stop the next one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That dynamic was front and center for many who heralded Mamdani\u2019s win as historic and called for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/democratic-party\">Democratic Party<\/a>&nbsp;leadership to embrace his vision on economic issues and a more populist style of politics to displace the corporate stranglehold on the party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alexandra Rojas, executive director of Justice Democrats, called Mamdani\u2019s victory \u201cthe turning point in this Democratic Party that our movement has been working towards for years: electing leaders with the moral courage to unite our voters to take on Republican authoritarianism, Democratic corporatism, and billionaire greed all at once.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cZohran Mamdani has never backed down from standing up to Trump and the forces that threaten our democracy,\u201d said Aru Shiney-Ajay, executive director of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/sunrise-movement\">Sunrise Movement<\/a>, a pro-democracy advocacy group focused on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/climate-crisis\">climate crisis<\/a>. \u201cThis is the leadership our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/democracy\">democracy<\/a>, and the Democratic Party, needs to rebuild trust with working people and fight for a future that works for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Magazine, a campaigner with the group\u2019s local NYC affiliate, echoed that sentiment. \u201cTonight, the people of New York City showed up in force and reminded the world that grassroots power can beat big money,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is more than a win for Zohran. It\u2019s a win for the movement and for democracy itself. We\u2019ve proven that a bold, people-powered vision can overcome the status quo, and this is just the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe oligarchy came out in full force against Zohran Mamdani\u2019s fight for a more affordable NYC,\u201d said former&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/labor\">labor<\/a>&nbsp;secretary&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/robert-reich\">Robert Reich<\/a>&nbsp;following Tuesday night\u2019s victory. \u201cIt didn\u2019t matter. Let his victory in the face of Big Money serve as a reminder that people have the power.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/bernie-sanders\">Bernie Sanders<\/a>&nbsp;(I-Vt.), who proudly endorsed Mamdani, also championed the win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStarting at 1% in the polls,\u201d said Sander, \u201cMamdani pulled off one of the great political upsets in modern American history. Yes. We CAN create a government that represents working people and not the 1%.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Rep.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez\">Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/a>&nbsp;(D-N.Y.), one of Mamdani\u2019s most prominent backers in the race, also heralded his victory as a major turning point, not just for New York City, but for the party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her remarks to&nbsp;<em>MSNBC&nbsp;<\/em>shortly after Mamdani\u2019s victory was declared, the New York Democrat said the campaign and the \u201cheroic effort\u201d of its supporters was not only a fight against Trump and Republican destruction but also a battle against the Democratic Party\u2019s \u201cold guard,\u201d which \u201cessentially led us to many of the perils of this moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mamdani, she explained, \u201chow a two-front war to win, which is what makes his win so deeply impressive\u201d in a broader political context that should be a wakeup call for those in the party resisting the kind of policies and politics that his campaign championed and exemplified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have a future to plan for.
