Stephan: Most of the media coverage about the Supreme Court is focused on the Trump-supporting fascist majority. But it is important to remember that there are three Associate Justices, all women, who still behave ethically, and want the United States to remain a democratic republic. An exchange between Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Donald Trump\u2019s Solicitor General D. John Sauer briefly silenced the U.S. Supreme Court<\/a> chamber Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sauer argued in Trump<\/a> v. Slaughter \u2013 <\/em>a case that could redefine the limits of presidential power over independent agencies and give the Trump more authority to fire officials \u2013 that the Constitution vests full removal authority in the president and that a 90-year precedent insulating officials inside those agencies should be discarded \u2014 showing how far the government intended to take the challenge, reported Newsweek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019re asking us to destroy the structure of government and to take away from Congress its ability to protect its idea that the government is better structured with some agencies that are independent,\u201d Sotomayor said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justice Samuel Alito asked Sauer to respond, and he assured the court that overturning the Humphrey\u2019s Executor<\/em> precedent \u2013 allowing President Donald Trump to fire independent agency leaders \u2013 would not fundamentally reshape the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe sky will not fall,\u201d Sauer said. \u201cThe entire government will move toward accountability to the people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
