But given the magnitude of our national debt as well as the proximity of the cliff, both are necessary,\u201d he argued. \u201cOn the spending-cut front&#8230; Social Security and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/medicare\">Medicare<\/a>&nbsp;benefits for future retirees should be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/02\/20\/opinion\/old-and-rich-less-help-for-you.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">means-tested<\/a>\u2014need-based, that is to say\u2014and the starting age for entitlement payments should be linked to American life expectancy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd on the tax front, it\u2019s time for rich people like me to pay more,\u201d wrote Romney, whose\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/magazines\/style\/entertainment\/article\/3285065\/7-richest-politicians-us-congress-net-worths-ranked-mitt-romney-and-ex-house-speaker-nancy-pelosi\" target=\"_blank\">estimated<\/a>\u00a0net worth last year, when he announced his January 2025\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/idahocapitalsun.com\/2024\/12\/05\/as-utah-sen-mitt-romney-bids-farewell-he-warns-against-those-who-tear-at-our-unity\/\" target=\"_blank\">retirement<\/a>\u00a0from the Senate, was $235 million. \u201cI long opposed increasing the income level on which\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/people\/materials\/pdfs\/EN-05-10297.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">FICA<\/a>\u00a0employment taxes are applied (this year, the cap is $176,100). Iowa state Rep. JD Scholten (D-1), a progressive who has previously\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/scholten-ernst-senate\" target=\"_blank\">run<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/scholten-ernst-senate\"><\/a>\u00a0for both chambers of Congress,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JDScholten\/status\/2002045202262041029?s=20\" target=\"_blank\">declared<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/social-media\">social media<\/a>: \u201cTax the rich! As the next chair of the House Budget Committee, increasing revenue by closing loopholes exploited by the wealthiest Americans will be a top priority.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Progressive Saikat Chakrabarti, who is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/saikat-chakrabarti-net-worth-nancy-pelosi-primary-challenger-2025-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly<\/a>&nbsp;worth at least $167 million and is one of the candidates&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/saikat-chakrabarti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">running<\/a>&nbsp;to replace retiring former House Speaker&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/nancy-pelosi\">Nancy Pelosi<\/a>&nbsp;(D-Calif.),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/saikatc\/status\/2002053455201079687\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">responded<\/a>: \u201cEven Mitt Romney now agrees that we need to tax the wealthiest. I call for a wealth tax on our billionaires and centimillionaires.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Linden, a senior policy fellow at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/washington\">Washington<\/a>\u00a0Center for Equitable Growth,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MichaelSLinden\/status\/2002020731928854973\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>: \u201cKudos to Mitt Romney for changing his mind and calling for higher taxes on the rich. I\u2019m not going to nitpick his op-ed (though there are a few things I disagree with), because the gist of it is right: We need real tax reform to make the rich pay more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JordanWoodME\/status\/2002042438634881294?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2002042438634881294%7Ctwgr%5Eee47020dd9a98aeca06b1a7427b2ae9b220a0830%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fmitt-romney\">https:\/\/x.com\/JordanWoodME\/status\/2002042438634881294?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2002042438634881294%7Ctwgr%5Eee47020dd9a98aeca06b1a7427b2ae9b220a0830%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fmitt-romney<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others pointed to Romney\u2019s record, including the impactful 47% remarks. The&nbsp;<em>Lever<\/em>\u2018s David Sirota&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.levernews.com\/confessions-of-the-retired-and-powerless\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wondered<\/a>, \u201cWhy is it that powerful people typically wait until they have no power to take the right position and effectively admit they were wrong when they had more power to do something about it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;Sirota:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>The obvious news of the op-ed is that we\u2019ve reached a point in which even American politics\u2019 very own Gordon Gekko\u2014a private equity mogul-turned-Republican politician\u2014is now admitting the tax system has been rigged for his fellow oligarchs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, hey, that\u2019s good. I believe in the politics of addition. I believe in welcoming converts to good causes in the spirit of \u201cbetter late than never.\u201d I believe there should be space for people to change their views for the better. And I appreciate Romney offering at least some pro forma explanation about what allegedly changed his thinking (sidenote: I say \u201callegedly\u201d because it\u2019s not like Romney only just now learned that the tax system was rigged\u2014he was literally a co-founder of Bain Capital!).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd yet, these kinds of reversals (without explicit apologies, of course) often come off as both long overdue but also vaguely inauthentic, or at least not as courageous and principled as they seem,\u201d Sirota continued, stressing that \u201cwhen Romney had real power, he fortified the rigged tax system that he\u2019s only now criticizing from the sidelines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
