The Trump administration\u2019s military assault on Venezuela<\/a> and apparent <\/a>abduction of the country\u2019s president in the early hours of Saturday morning sparked immediate backlash from leaders in Latin America<\/a> and across the globe, with lawmakers, activists, and experts accusing the US of launching yet another illegal war of aggression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latin American leaders portrayed the assault as a continuation of the long, bloody history of US intervention in the region, which has included vicious military coups<\/a> and material support<\/a> for genocidal right-wing<\/a> forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is state terrorism against the brave Venezuelan people and against Our America,\u201d Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel wrote<\/a> in a social media<\/a> post, demanding urgent action from the international community in response to the \u201ccriminal attack.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evo Morales<\/a>, the leftist former president of Bolivia<\/a>, said that \u201cwe strongly and unequivocally repudiate\u201d the US attack on Venezuela.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is brutal imperialist aggression that violates its sovereignty,\u201d Morales added. \u201cAll our solidarity<\/a> with the Venezuelan people in resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colombian President Gustavo Petro, one of the first world leaders to respond to Saturday\u2019s developments, decried US \u201caggression against the sovereignty of Venezuela and of Latin America.\u201d Petro said Colombian forces \u201care being deployed\u201d to the nation\u2019s border with Venezuela and that \u201call available support forces will be deployed in the event of a massive influx of refugees<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWithout sovereignty, there is no nation,\u201d said Petro. \u201cPeace is the way, and dialogue between peoples is fundamental for national unity. Dialogue and more dialogue is our proposal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The presidents of Chile<\/a> and Mexico<\/a> similarly condemned the assault as a violation of Venezuela\u2019s sovereignty and international law<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBased on its foreign policy principles and pacifist vocation, Mexico urgently calls for respect for international law, as well as the principles and purposes of the UN Charter, and to cease any act of aggression against the Venezuelan government and people,\u201d the Mexican government said in a statement. \u201cLatin America and the Caribbean is a zone of peace, built on mutual respect, the peaceful settlement of disputes, and the prohibition of the use and threat of force, and therefore any military action puts regional stability at serious risk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One Latin American leader, far-right Argentine president and Trump ally Javier Milei, openly celebrated the alleged US capture of Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, declaring on social media, \u201cFREEDOM ADVANCES.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leaders and lawmakers in Europe also reacted to the US bombings. Pedro S\u00e1nchez, the prime minister of Spain<\/a>, issued a cautious statement calling for \u201cdeescalation and responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

British MP Zarah Sultana was far more forceful, writing on social media that \u201cVenezuela has the world\u2019s largest oil<\/a> reserves\u2014and that\u2019s no coincidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is naked US imperialism<\/a>: an illegal assault on Caracas aimed at overthrowing a sovereign government and plundering its resources,\u201d Sultana added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
