Scott Wiener sat there frozen and did not move, let alone indicate Yes or No.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>With Nancy Pelosi&#8217;s congressional seat legitimately up for grabs for the first time in nearly 40 years, the three challengers to succeed her \u2014 Scott Wiener, Connie Chan, and Saikat Chakrabarti \u2014 duked it out at a candidate forum Wednesday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi has been an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-50079639\">absolutely groundbreaking and legendary legislator<\/a>, but she\u2019s been the only congressional representative San Francisco has seen&nbsp;<em>since freaking 1987.&nbsp;<\/em>And at 85 years old, it&#8217;s probably time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So Pelosi has announced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2025\/11\/06\/nancy-pelosi-says-shell-retire\/\">she\u2019s going to retire soon<\/a>, which finally opens up her seat for a new representative. And \u201cbarring any lunacy\u201d (in the words of Mission Local\u2019s Joe Eskenazi), Pelosi\u2019s seat will be won in November either by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2025\/10\/22\/scott-wiener-formally-announces-run-for-congress-ahead-of-any-pelosi-decision\/\">state Senator Scott Wiener<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2025\/11\/20\/connie-chan-officially-in-london-breed-out-in-race-for-pelosis-house-seat\/\">D1 SF Supervisor Connie Chan<\/a>, or former tech executive and AOC\/Bernie staffer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2025\/10\/09\/pelosi-challenger-saikat-chakrabarti-officially-kicks-off-his-2026-campaign-at-sfs-the-chapel\/\">Saikat Chakrabarti<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mission Local\u2019s Joe Eskenazi made that assessment Wednesday night when the three candidates faced off on the same stage for the first time at UC Law San Francisco. It was a \u201ccandidates forum\u201d (technically not a debate) sponsored by the California Working Families Party, Alice B. Toklas LGBTQ Democratic Club, and the Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club. And you can watch the entire two-hour affair below, though we\u2019ve picked out the good parts to give you a Cliffs Notes version of what happened Wednesday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"San Francisco Congressional Candidate Forum (CA-11)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Reo0e38zb3I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The forum doesn\u2019t really start until the 8:45 mark, and naturally, begins with a moment of silence for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2026\/01\/08\/deadly-ice-shooting-prompts-protests-across-the-bay-area\/\">Wednesday\u2019s ICE shooting victim Renee Nicole Good<\/a>. The forum was moderated by the Bay Area Reporter\u2019s Cynthia Laird and Joe Eskenazi, who hilariously started with the first question \u201cWhat is the role of a San Francisco congressperson \u2013 oh, Jesus Christ!&#8221; (an expletive he muttered upon realizing he forgot to allow the candidates to give their opening statements).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the Chronicle points out, these three far-left candidates&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/politics\/joegarofoli\/article\/san-francisco-house-forum-21277528.php\">completely agree on almost every national issue<\/a>. &#8220;They all support Medicare for All,\u201d as the Chron points out. \u201cThey would all like to break Pacific Gas and Electric Co.\u2019s monopoly and allow municipalities to adopt public power. The question was \u201cIs Israel committing genocide in Gaza?\u201d and Chan and Chakrabarti immediately held up their Yes signs. Scott Wiener sat there frozen and did not move, let alone indicate Yes or No. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2026\/01\/08\/san-francisco-house-race-wiener-chan-chakrabarti-forum\/\">As the SF Standard tells it<\/a>, \u201cAudience members shouted \u2018Shame on you,&#8217; \u2018Sellout,\u2019 and \u2018Free Palestine.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2026\/01\/sf-pelosi-wiener-chan-chakrabarti-congress\/\">Mission Local describes the bedlam<\/a>&nbsp;as people yelling \u201c\u2018Answer the question Scott!,\u2019 \u2018Shame on you! Shame on you!,\u2019\u201d and says that \u201cSeveral waved keffiyahs from their seats.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wiener tried a little cleanup on Aisle Seven in post-event remarks. \u201cHamas should not be running Gaza,\u201d Wiener told the Standard afterward, but added that the Israeli government\u2019s level of violence, \u201cis an absolute moral stain and horrifying to me.\u201d The Standard asked him point-blank if it was genocide, and Wiener said, \u201cPeople can label it whatever noun or adjective they want to put on it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.sfist.com\/2026\/01\/forum-chan.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Image: CA Working Families Party&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Reo0e38zb3I\">via Youtube<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Supervisor Chan managed to localize all of these issues more than the other two (she even dropped a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2005\/04\/04\/sophie_maxwell_pisses_off_the_blogosphere\/\">Sophie Maxwell<\/a>&nbsp;reference!), emphasizing that Democrats need to improve their message \u201con our agenda, we have not delivered for working people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSan Francisco\u2019s rent is too high, and the cost of living is too high, and that\u2019s the most pressing thought on many of us living in San Francisco,\u201d she said. Chan claimed she had \u201cbeat back billionaires, twice\u201d (referring to her&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2020\/11\/09\/connie-chan-and-myrna-melgar-join-sf-board-of-supervisors-representing-districts-1-and-7\/\">two D1 electoral victories<\/a>, both in which the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2022\/03\/25\/yimby-tech-pac-going-after-supervors-mar-and-chan-hopes-to-raise-300k-to-recall-boudin\/\">YIMBY\/tech class came at her hard<\/a>).\u201cWe cannot take back Congress by cozying up to billionaires,\u201d Chan said Wednsday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.sfist.com\/2026\/01\/forum-sai8kat-.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Image: CA Working Families Party&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Reo0e38zb3I\">via Youtube<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Saikat Chakrabarti also leaned hard on an anti-establishment message. &#8220;We\u2019re going to have to take on not just MAGA republicans, but corporate money, and the failed democratic establishment,\u201d he said at the forum. \u201cWe need to completely change the direction and leadership of the Democratic party.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though as Mission Local notes, \u201cWhen asked about his supportive vote for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spur.org\/voter-guide\/2018-11\/sf-prop-c-business-tax-homeless-services\">Prop C<\/a>&nbsp;after the debate, Chakrabarti said that he knew Prop C was a municipal bond but couldn\u2019t remember what it was about specifically, looking it up on his phone.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.sfist.com\/2026\/01\/form-wiener-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Image: CA Working Families Party&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Reo0e38zb3I\">via Youtube<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And Wiener went after Chakrabarti pretty ruthlessly for his lack of involvement in anything resembling SF local politics. \u201cIt\u2019s not enough to just to have good opinions or a lot of hot takes, or go on a lot of podcasts, or spend six months on Capitol Hill and then leave,\u201d Wiener said, clearly singling out Chakrabarti&#8217;s recent resume. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to show that you are up to the task of building the broad-based coalitions that we need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the Chronicle also notes, each of these candidates would be a \u201cfirst\u201d: Wiener would be the SF\u2019s first openly gay congressperson, Chan would be the first Asian-American, Chakrabarti would be the first Indian-American.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless, only two of these candidates will survive the June 2, 2026 primary election.
