Nancy Pelosi<\/a>&nbsp;centered on how each contender thinks power should be wielded and what kind of leader San Francisco needs in a Congress mired in dysfunction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why it matters:<\/strong>&nbsp;The packed event highlights how California&#8217;s 11th Congressional District race is shaping up to be San Francisco&#8217;s most consequential open-seat House contest in decades, featuring three candidates of varying shades of Democrat blue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Pelosi&#8217;s successor will inherit a role defined not just by its deep-blue electorate, but by an expectation of influence that comes at a time when Congress is fractured and Democrats&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/punchbowl.news\/article\/the-daily-punch\/venezuela-dems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remain split<\/a>&nbsp;over how to confront a second Trump presidency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>State of play<\/strong>: In an election defying the typical partisan battles for national seats, the three candidates mainly sparred over how to approach issues they largely agree on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>On stage Wednesday night:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/san-francisco\/2025\/11\/20\/connie-chan-pelosi-congress-race\">District 1 Supervisor Connie Chan<\/a>, a progressive on the Board of Supervisors since 2021,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/san-francisco\/2025\/10\/22\/scott-wiener-pelosi-congress-run\">state Sen. Scott Wiener<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2025\/10\/30\/saikat-chakrabarti-nancy-pelosi-democratic-party-00624012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saikat Chakrabarti<\/a>, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2019\/08\/02\/aoc-staff-saikat-chakrabarti-climate-1445478\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">once-polarizing<\/a>&nbsp;figure on Capitol Hill and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez&#8217;s former chief of staff.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During the hours-long debate, more than 500 residents cramped inside a UC Law (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclawsf.edu\/new-name\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">formerly Hastings<\/a>) auditorium near Civic Center, where the eager hopefuls answered questions on their policy priorities, governing styles and track records.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The big picture:&nbsp;<\/strong>The forum felt like a political speed-dating sesh, each competing to distinguish themselves in tightly-timed bursts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>They broadly agreed on marquee progressive priorities \u2014 backing universal health care, curbing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/article\/san-francisco-pge-breakup-21268937.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PG&amp;E&#8217;s grip<\/a>&nbsp;and endorsing changes to the Supreme Court and impeachment proceedings against President Trump.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The fault lines emerged in a rapid-fire yes-or-no segment when Chan and Chakrabarti raised &#8220;Yes&#8221; signs in response to a question about Israel&#8217;s actions in Gaza being labeled as &#8220;genocide.&#8221; Wiener \u2014 who is Jewish \u2014 hesitated to answer, prompting audible opposition from the crowd.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wiener later told reporters the format flattened a complex issue. He maintained he doesn&#8217;t &#8220;support U.S. funding for the destruction of Palestinian communities&#8221; or Israel&#8217;s escalation of violence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Between the lines:&nbsp;<\/strong>Chan \u2014 a progressive with a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/san-francisco\/2025\/09\/12\/lurie-family-zoning-plan-sf-housing-debate\">cautious approach<\/a>&nbsp;to some housing developments and upzoning\u2014 positioned herself as a defender of the working class, advocate against billionaire power grabs and proponent of fiscal budgets that prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;When federal government&#8217;s elected leadership fails to deliver for people, they feel dismissed,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We have to attack Trump and take back our country&#8230; but also deliver for the working people.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wiener, a pragmatist at heart,&nbsp;<\/strong>came armed with a legislative resum\u00e9, touting his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sd11.senate.ca.gov\/legislation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ambitious policy-setting record<\/a>&nbsp;around housing, healthcare, public transportation and LGBTQ+ rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>He cast the seat as a command post \u2014 not an activist megaphone \u2014 leaning hard into Pelosi&#8217;s legacy: San Francisco needs a representative who knows how to confront Congress&#8217; hostile terrain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;It&#8217;s not enough just to have good opinions or a lot of hot takes or go on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/saikat-chakrabartis-plan-for-the-political-revolution\/id1195206601?i=1000736729532\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a lot of podcasts<\/a>&nbsp;or spend&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2019\/08\/02\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-saikat-chakrabarti-corbin-trent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">six months on Capitol Hill<\/a>,&#8221; he said in what appeared to be a veiled jab at Chakrabarti.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;You got to show that you are going to be up the task to build a broad-based coalition&#8230; MAGA doesn&#8217;t want me in D.C. because they know I know how to keep up. That&#8217;s what we need,&#8221; he added.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chakrabarti<\/strong>, a political strategist and former Silicon Valley techie who has emerged as a prominent insurgent voice among Democrats (but has never held public office), channeled the anti-establishment &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/sanders-means-democratic-socialism\/story?id=35315871#:~:text=Sanders%20talked%20extensively%20about%20health,one%20vote%2C%E2%80%9D%20he%20added.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Feel the Bern&#8221; vibe<\/a>&nbsp;espoused by politicians like AOC and NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>He quickly refuted Wiener&#8217;s claims against him before explaining his class-conscious, systemic overhaul plans and decreasing the cost-of-living, among other reform-driven priorities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;We need to deliver a fundamentally better life-for-all and to do that, we need to perform major surgery on the entire system,&#8221; he said.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The bottom line<\/strong>: Voters will have much of this year to make up their mind on who will follow Pelosi, and a seasoned politician, a local progressive and a movement-minded disruptor will be fighting for those votes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Add Axios on Google The first major face-off Wednesday in the race to succeed&nbsp;Rep.
