The Party slogan \u201cWar Is Peace, Freedom Is Slavery, Ignorance Is Strength\u201d is a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dogma\">dogma<\/a>&nbsp;which the Party expects the citizens of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nations_of_Nineteen_Eighty-Four\">Oceania<\/a>&nbsp;to accept as true. Writing in his secret diary in the year 1984, the protagonist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Winston_Smith_(Nineteen_Eighty-Four)\">Winston Smith<\/a>&nbsp;ponders if the Party might declare \u201ctwo plus two equals five\u201d as fact, as well as whether or not belief in such a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Consensus_reality\">consensus reality<\/a>&nbsp;substantiates the lie.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2_%2B_2_%3D_5#cite_note-Orwell_1949-19\">[19]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;About the falsity of \u201ctwo plus two equals five\u201d, in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ministries_in_Nineteen_Eighty-Four#Ministry_of_Love\">Ministry of Love<\/a>, the interrogator&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/O%27Brien_(Nineteen_Eighty-Four)\">O\u2019Brien<\/a>&nbsp;tells the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thoughtcrime\">thought criminal<\/a>&nbsp;Smith that control over physical reality is unimportant to the Party, provided the citizens of Oceania subordinate their real-world perceptions to the political will of the Party; and that, by way of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Doublethink\">doublethink<\/a>: \u201cSometimes, Winston. [Sometimes it is four fingers.] Sometimes they are five. Sometimes they are three. Sometimes they are all of them at once\u201d.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2_%2B_2_%3D_5#cite_note-Orwell_1949-19\">[19]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Orwell used the idea of 2 + 2 = 5 in an essay of January 1939 in&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Adelphi\">The Adelphi<\/a><\/em>; \u201cReview of&nbsp;<em>Power: A New Social Analysis<\/em>&nbsp;by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bertrand_Russell\">Bertrand Russell<\/a>\u201c:<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2_%2B_2_%3D_5#cite_note-20\">[20]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>It is quite possible that we are descending into an age in which two plus two will make five when the Leader says so.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In propaganda work for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BBC\">BBC<\/a>&nbsp;during the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\">Second World War<\/a>, Orwell applied the illogic of 2 + 2 = 5 to counter the reality-denying psychology of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nazi_propaganda\">Nazi propaganda<\/a>, which he addressed in the essay \u201cLooking Back on the Spanish War\u201d (1943):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Nazi theory, indeed, specifically denies that such a thing as \u201cthe truth\u201d exists. There is, for instance, no such thing as \u201cScience\u201d. There is only \u201cGerman Science\u201d, \u201cJewish Science\u201d, etc. The implied objective of this line of thought is a nightmare world in which the Leader, or some ruling clique, controls not only the future, but&nbsp;<em>the past<\/em>. If the Leader says of such and such an event, \u201cIt never happened\u201d\u2014well, it never happened. If he says that \u201ctwo and two are five\u201d\u2014well, two and two are five. This prospect frightens me much more than bombs\u2014and, after our experiences of the last few years [the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Blitz\">Blitz<\/a>, 1940\u201341] that is not a frivolous statement.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2_%2B_2_%3D_5#cite_note-lookingback-21\">[21]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In addressing Nazi&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anti-intellectualism\">anti-intellectualism<\/a>, Orwell\u2019s reference might have been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hermann_G%C3%B6ring\">Hermann G\u00f6ring<\/a>\u2018s hyperbolic praise of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adolf_Hitler\">Adolf Hitler<\/a>: \u201cIf the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/F%C3%BChrer\">F\u00fchrer<\/a>&nbsp;wants it, two and two makes five!\u201d<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2_%2B_2_%3D_5#cite_note-22\">[22]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In the political novel&nbsp;<em>Nineteen Eighty-Four<\/em>, concerning the Party\u2019s philosophy of government for Oceania, Orwell said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>In the end, the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it. It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality, was tacitly denied by their philosophy. The heresy of heresies was common sense. And what was terrifying was not that they would kill you for thinking otherwise, but that they might be right. For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable\u2014what then?<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2_%2B_2_%3D_5#cite_note-23\">[23]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The 1951 British edition of the text, published by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Secker_%26_Warburg\">Secker &amp; Warburg<\/a>, erroneously omitted the \u201c5\u201d, thus rendering it simply as \u201c2 + 2 =\u201d.
