Responding to the news that the Department of Defense had put 1,500 active duty troops on standby for a potential deployment to Minnesota, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey had a clear message for the Trump administration<\/a>: \u201cWe will not be intimidated by the actions of this federal government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis act was clearly designed to intimidate the people of Minneapolis, and here\u2019s the thing: We\u2019re not going to be intimidated,\u201d Frey told<\/a> Jake Tapper on CNN<\/em>\u2018s \u201cState of the Union\u201d Sunday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The news of the troop deployment was first broken by ABC<\/em> and confirmed<\/a> to the Washington Post<\/a><\/em> late Saturday night. It came two days after President Donald Trump<\/a> threatened<\/a> to invoke the Insurrection Act due to widespread protests<\/a> against a major federal immigration<\/a> enforcement operation in the Twin Cities that has already led to the death<\/a> of legal observer Renee Good and the shooting and injuring<\/a> of Venezuelan migrant Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not certain that the soldiers, who belong to two Alaska-based infantry battalions, will actually be deployed. The White House<\/a> said it was typical for the Pentagon<\/a> \u201cto be prepared for any decision the President may or may not make.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI never thought in a million years that we would be invaded by our own federal government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, if they were deployed, Frey told Tapper it would be \u201cridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that there are already around 3,000 Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a> (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP<\/a>) officers in the area compared with around 600 local police officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
