A few dozen supporters showed up for Saturday\u2019s decidedly unironic \u201cMarch for Billionaires\u201d protest, which was evenly matched by several members of the press and a group of activists one-upping the sympathizers with a satirical \u201cMarch for Trillionaires\u201d rally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Mission Local reports<\/a>, a small contingent of billionaire supporters, who claim they\u2019re not actually billionaires themselves, held a \u201cMarch for Billionaires\u201d protest at Alta Plaza Park in San Francisco\u2019s Pacific Heights Saturday morning. Naturally, the event drew a crowd of onlookers, including several journalists and about a dozen animated protestors dressed in formal wear, proclaiming they were taking part in a \u201cMarch for Trillioinaires,\u201d\u00a0per Broke-Ass Stuart<\/a>\u00a0on Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As SFist reported<\/a> earlier this week, many assumed the original march was some sort of joke, but the organizers confirmed their intention was to spread awareness about their grievances against the billionaire tax. Per the LA Times<\/a>, the pro-billionaire crowd thinks Californians should be grateful for the billionaires who hoard their fortunes here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe must not judge billionaires as a class but by their individual merits,\u201d said organizer Derik Kauffman Saturday, per the Times. \u201cThere are good billionaires and bad billionaires, just like there are good people and bad people. California is extraordinarily lucky that this is where people come to start companies and build fortunes and we should do our best to keep it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the Chronicle reports<\/a>, about a dozen nearby counter-protestors dressed to the nines \u2014 including a Mr. Monopoly lookalike and a couple nicknamed \u201cOli Garch\u201d and \u201cTrilly O\u2019Naire,\u201d per the Times, held signs with messages such as \u201cLet them eat cake\u201d and \u201cDefund the poor,\u201d per the Chronicle. Per Broke-Ass Stuart, one participant sported a chef\u2019s hat and bushy mustache while hoisting a stuffed \u201cChef Bourgeoisie\u201d puppet into the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the pro-billionaire participants boasted signs with messages, such as, \u201cWe *heart* you Jeffrey Bezos,\u201d per Mission Local, and \u201cGains from trade,\u201d per the Chronicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would say we were horrified that they\u2019ve been talking about taxing billionaires to pay for Medicaid, to pay for hunger prevention, to pay for kids\u2019 education. That is not a good use of my money,\u201d quipped a counter-protestor, per the Chronicle. \u201cYou want to know a good use of my money? I\u2019ve got this other island I\u2019m looking at.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Per Mission Local, a pro-billionaire protestor named Annie provided some choice quotes, including the notion that journalists should be eliminated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is the intention of journalists to lie, which is why we need to not do anything to the journalists themselves, but we need to simply remove them as a class,\u201d said Annie, per Mission Local. \u201cJust like Germany does to the extremist organizations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And of course, the poors are \u201cjust jealous.\u201d \u201cPeople are just jealous that they are poorer and weaker and uglier,\u201d said Annie, per Mission Local. \u201cWe are beautiful. We\u2019re smart. We\u2019re strong\u2026 We are supporting the billionaires, here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artist Razelle Swimmer, the counter-protestor who brought the Chef Bourgeoisie puppet, pointed out the absurdity of the pro-billionaire stance to the Chronicle. \u201cThere are people literally on the streets that don\u2019t have anything to eat in the place where we\u2019re ending this march,\u201d said Swimmer, referring to the Civic Center area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s sad,\u201d Swimmer said, per the Chronicle. \u201cThey represent a group of Americans who still believe in this concept that if you just pull yourself hard enough by your bootstraps, you\u2019ll have $8 billion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
